About the UTSA Roadrunners
The Roadrunners snapped a three-game losing streak on Wednesday with the 76-74 win over Merrimack in Troy, Alabama. UTSA split the week after falling to host Troy on Monday, 86-72. UTSA battled a late-half scoring slump against Troy that created a notable halftime deficit. In the second game of the week, after leading by as many as 16, the Warriors overtook UTSA and created a 14-point gap of their own. However, across the final four minutes, Primo Spears took over the game and led UTSA to a 20-4 outscoring of Merrimack for the biggest program comeback since January 2019. Spears registered a season-high 29 points off 11-of-22 shooting and 5-of-9 beyond the arc. Spears has led the Roadrunners in each game and registered his fourth 20+ point scoring effort – making him the second-highest scorer in the American Athletic Conference and 12th in the NCAA at 22.2 ppg. In addition, Jonnivius Smith recorded a double-double of 11 points and 20 rebounds – the most rebounds since 1988 and just the third player to reach that count in program history.

UTSA leads the nation in steals with an average of 12.2, forcing the eighth-most turnovers on average (18.20) in the nation. UTSA has also proven strong on the offensive glass, ranking 13th in the NCAA with the second-most offensive boards in the AAC (15.2 rpg). Though somewhat limited on opportunities in Alabama, UTSA is also in the NCAA’s upper tier at the free throw line, leading the AAC and ranking 15th nationally with a team 80.2 percent – led by Marcus Millender with an NCAA 28th-best 93.8 percent.

Series History with Houston Christian
Saturday will mark the 12th meeting between these programs, with UTSA earning the last win for the 6-5 advantage, coming out of Houston with an 89-87 win last November. UTSA is 2-3 against the Huskies at home, dating back to the first series game in 1981. The Roadrunners have won the last three consecutive meetings.

This will be Austin Claunch’s first UTSA matchup with the Huskies, but he’s quite familiar, having earned a 9-1 record against Houston Christian while coaching at Nicholls.

About the Houston Christian Huskies
Coming in at 2-5, it’s been a challenging start for first-year head coach Craig Doty, who earned a six-year 97-76 record at Emporia State. The Huskies have faced some heavy hitters early, including losses to No. 19 Texas and No. 14 Creighton, dropping a tight game to Rice where they earned a double-digit lead and were on top into the final two minutes before the 61-58 final setback. They’ve lost three straight after falling to Eastern Michigan and Northern Arizona in their tournament earlier in the week.

The Huskies are led by a double-figure trio of Elijah Brooks, Julian Mackey and Bryson Dawkins. Brooks played at North Dakota last season and is averaging 12.0 ppg and a team-best 4.7 rpg, along with 2.0 apg. Mackey is putting up a team-leading 12.4 ppg with 3.7 boards, along with 2.3 apg, playing last season at Georgia State. Coming from Itawamba Community College, Dawkins is putting up 10.4 ppg and 4.0 rpg.

Up Next
The road is where UTSA is headed for the next week, traveling to St. Mary’s (CA) for a Dec. 3 date in Moraga, California. UTSA returns briefly to San Antonio before taking on 19th-ranked Arkansas in Fayetteville on Dec. 7.
