SAN ANTONIO – On Wednesday, UTSA volleyball coach Carol Price-Torok announced the addition of Giada Obregon, Brooklyn Grobb-Prins and Taylor Gaines, who all joined the program on National Signing Day.
Giada Obregon | 5-3 | DS | Floresville, Texas | Floresville HS
Obregon hit the ground running at Floresville HS, winning District 27-4A Newcomer of the Year honors as a freshman, ahead of a First Team All-District award as a sophomore and Defensive MVP as a junior. She was also a Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star in 2023 and was a mainstay on the Academic All-District Teams, thanks to a 4.0 GPA.
She propelled her team to the regional semifinals in back-to-back seasons, winning championships at the District, Bi-District and Area stages in the process. Additionally, she competed with the San Antonio Magic at the club level.
Obregon is the daughter of Stephanie Sifentues and John Obregon and has one sister, Mickey Sifentues. She grew up around the game, as her mother played collegiately at UT Brownsville and her sister at Angelo State. She will study psychology at UTSA and hopes to become a sports therapist.
Head Coach Carol Price-Torok on Obregon:
“We’re excited to keep local talent in the 210. She comes from a volleyball family and understands what it takes to be successful. One of her biggest strengths is her speed and she’s very consistent and competitive. We’re excited to get her in the gym early in the spring”.
Brooklyn Grobb-Prins | 6-3 | OH | Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada | Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School
A high-level athlete with a wealth of international experience, Grobb-Prins has climbed the ladder quickly, making the Canadian U21 squad at just 16 years old. With Team Canada, she’s competed at the U21 Shanghai Future Stars Tournament, was a part of the U19 Canadian National Team Development Program, saw action with Team Canada White at the 2022 Canadian Cup and has been a mainstay in the National Excellence Program with Volleyball Canada. Grobb-Prins is the daughter of Pete Prins and Katie Grobb, and has one brother, Nicholas. With the Roadrunners, she will study business, with the goal of entering the finance industry.
Head Coach Carol Price-Torok on Grobb-Prins:
“Brooklyn has an incredibly high ceiling and her success within the Canadian national teams’ pipeline makes it clear that she’s a great addition to our pins. She’s a very physical and versatile player … her international experience will translate well into our conference”.
Taylor Gaines | 6-0 | OH | Liberty Hill, Texas | Liberty Hill HS
Gaines has been incredible for Liberty Hill High School, with highlights including a 2023 Texas UIL 5A State Runner-Up finish. She was a state semifinalist in 2022 and claimed championships at the 2024 Westwood Showcase and Glen Rose Tournament with Austin Juniors. Additionally, she was named Tournament MVP at both the Westwood Showcase and Glen Rose Tournament.
After securing an All-District honorable mention as a freshman, she excelled, cracking the district’s first team en route to Texas Girls Coaches Association’s and Texas Sports Writers Association All-State honors as a sophomore. A 2023 AVCA Phenom watchlist member, she’s on the 2024 AVCA All-America watchlist and has surpassed 1,000 career kills.
Gaines holds a 4.0 GPA and has a trio of Academic All-District awards in recognition of that. The National Honor Society member will study marketing at UTSA and wants to own a salon someday. She is the daughter of Erin and Chris Grimes and has one brother, Caden. Her father played basketball down I-35 at Texas State.
Head Coach Carol Price-Torok on Gaines
“I first heard about Taylor from a former player in her high school coach, Maria Bruce. Her phenomenal jump stood out quickly, and I’m excited to add her energy and attitude to our program.”
