Vargas’ 3-under scorecard headlines Sunday action at Trinity Forest Invitational

DALLAS — Logan Vargas posted a 3-under-par scorecard to headline Sunday action for the UTSA men’s golf team at the Trinity Forest Invitational at Trinity Forest Golf Club (par 72/7,617 yards).

Vargas fired a 69 that featured a trio of birdies to grab a share of 16th place and help the Roadrunners register a 294, good for 14th place, six shots ahead of UT Arlington and only a pair of strokes behind North Texas with 36 holes remaining.

A junior out of Lubbock, Texas, Vargas was one of 22 players to break 70 in the first round of the three-day tournament. He opened with a birdie on the 420-yard, par-4 first hole. Following three consecutive pars, he wrote down a four on the 630-yard fifth to help him log a 2-under 34 on the front side. The transfer from Odessa College recorded his third birdie of the day on No. 12, a 412-yard par-4. He is part of a six-way tie for 16th and is just one shot out the top 10.

Brayden Bare, Kaelen Dulany and Walker Franklin are all tied for 65th after each turned in a 75.

Bare, a redshirt sophomore from Waco, posted birdies on the fifth, 14th and 17th holes.

Dulany, a sophomore transfer out of Keller, saw his round highlighted with a four on the 570-yard, par-5 16th.

Franklin, a senior from Colorado, led the lineup with five birdies, including three on a four-hole stretch as part of a 1-under 35 on the back.

Jack Wehman rounds out the lineup in 83rd (79), while Logan Zurn — who is playing as an individual — equaled Franklin with five birdies en route to a 2-under 70 that has earned him a share of 23rd place.

USC tops the team standings at 15-under 273 behind individual leader Jack Buchanan (-8). Loyola Marymount (-12), UNLV (-11), Louisiana (-11) and host SMU (-9) round out the top five.

Round two is slated for Monday and the Roadrunners will tee off from No. 10 beginning at 9:45 a.m.
