HOUSTON – UTSA men’s tennis senior Danijal Muminovic turned in a history-making performance on Saturday at the American Athletic Conference Individual Championships at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. Muminovic delivered the key semifinal victory to become the first Roadrunner to earn the right to play for the singles title.
With this being the first time that the conference individual championships have been held and the first time the NCAA will hold its championships in the fall, Muminovic (Senior/Tulza, Bosnia) hasn’t disappointed this weekend, moving unseeded past top-seeded Pablo Alemany from Memphis, eight-seed John Bernard from Florida Atlantic and now Tulsa’s fifth-seeded Timothy Carlsson Seger. Muminovic fell behind Carlsson Seger with a first-set 7-5 loss, but battled back to claim sets two and three, 6-3 and 6-4 – taking UTSA’s first program spot in the singles final on the first opportunity.
Muminovic moves on to face Tulsa’s Alex Okonkwo, who also entered the tournament unseeded and made his way to the final with wins over Noah Malige, No. 6 Fransisco Llanes, and Martim Marujo.
While the championships reconvene on Sunday at 9 a.m., the men’s singles final is set for 11 a.m. at the Brown Tennis Center. The finals matches will be streamed live on ESPN+. Live will continue into Sunday and through the results site, here, which also will continue airing court video.
