UTSA climbs two spots on final day of Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational

SAUCIER, Miss. — Paced by a 2-under-par scorecard from Kaelen Dulany in the final round, the UTSA men’s golf team climbed two spots into seventh place and finished ahead of three top-50-ranked teams at the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational at Beau Rivage’s Private Course, Fallen Oak (par 72/7,487 yards).

Dulany’s 70 helped the Roadrunners record an even-par 288 on the final day and end up with an 880 (300-292-288) to place seventh, one shot ahead of No. 48 Purdue and five in front of Wisconsin. UTSA also finished ahead of 10th-place and 36th-ranked Kansas (886), Iowa (887), Southern Miss (890) and No. 32 UNLV (899).

Dulany wrote down four birdies on Tuesday en route to posting his low score as a Roadrunner. After reeling off five straight pars to start his day, he recorded a four on the 548-yard, par-5 sixth before closing out the front nine with three more pars. On the back, the sophomore transfer from Keller, Texas, countered a double bogey on the 12th with birdies on the 575-yard, par-5 13th, the 604-yard, par-5 15th and the 418-yard, par-4 16th. Dulany, who opened the event with a 74 on Saturday and Sunday, moved up 10 spots into a tie for 23rd at 2-over 218, his best 54-hole total of the season.

Logan Zurn was one shot behind Dulany in a tie for 27th at 3-over 219. The junior from Grapevine, Texas, bounced back from a 77 in the first round with a 3-under 69 on Sunday before closing with a 73 that featured birdies on the 423-yard, par-4 fourth and both par fives on the back nine.

Walker Franklin also jumped up the leaderboard on the final day, moving from 58th to a share of 45th at 8-over 224 (79-73-72). The senior from Colorado turned in his best round of the tournament on Monday, logging three birdies on his even-par scorecard.

Brayden Bare and Logan Vargas rounded out the UTSA lineup in 57th (71-76-79—226) and 63rd (78-77-73—228), respectively.

Playing as an individual, David Martinez registered an eagle-three on the 548-yard, par-5 sixth hole in his final round and ended up in a tie for 67th (79-78-73—230).

No. 2 Ole Miss (-20) captured the team title in the field that included nine top-50 squads. Fifth-ranked LSU and No. 15 Illinois tied for runner-up honors (-11) with No. 29 Georgia (-3) and No. 23 South Carolina (-1) making up the rest of the top five.

The Roadrunners will wrap up the fall slate on Oct. 28-29 at The Clerico in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
