Abonce’s 67 highlights final round of Jim West Challenge

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Daniela Abonce fired a 5-under-par 67 to highlight final-round action for the UTSA women’s golf team at the Jim West Challenge on Monday at Kissing Tree Golf Club (par 72/6,123 yards).

Abonce posted her best round of the fall season to help the Roadrunners register their top team score of the campaign with a 4-under 284, shaving 13 strokes off their previous best round of the tournament. With what is tied for the seventh-best score in program history, the junior from Mexico soared 14 places up the individual leaderboard on the final day to end up with a share of 16th place at 3-under 213, her best 54-hole total of the season.

After opening the 54-hole tournament with a pair of 73s on Sunday, Abonce wrote down five birdies to notch the 28th par-or-better round and ninth sub-70 score of her career. Starting on No. 13, she followed back-to-back pars with three consecutive birdies, recording a three on the 321-yard, 16th hole followed by a four on the 473-yard 17th and a three on the 241-yard 18th. The reigning American Athletic Conference champion then added birdies on Nos. 4-5 on her bogey-free scorecard to round out the week with a team-best dozen birdies.

Meanwhile, the Roadrunners finished 10th with a 17-over 881 (300-297-284) in their fall finale to end up 34 strokes ahead of Nebraska and 35 in front of Northern Illinois.

Morgan Ellison posted her fifth top-30 finish of the season by tying for 27th at even-par 216. The senior from Peachtree City, Georgia, turned in her third 72 of the week on the strength of back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3-4 as well as on the 18th.

Olivia Williams earned a share of 46th at 9-over 153. After opening with a 78-76—154 on Monday, the junior out of England carded a 1-under 71 in the final round behind three birdies, all as part of a 2-under 34 on the front side.

Maria Bastarrica’s final round 74 was headlined by an eagle-three on the 493-yard, par-5 third hole as well as a birdied on the 15th. The sophomore from Spain ended up in 53rd at 11-over 227 (77-76-74).

Sydney Bisgrove logged four birdies during a 78 in the final round on Tuesday and finished 68th (95-86-78—259).

No. 23 TCU captured the team title with a 22-under 842, followed by 26th-ranked Houston (-21), Oklahoma (-20), No. 27 Ohio State (-15) and No. 47 Texas Tech (-15) in the top five.

TCU’s Kirstin Angosta claimed the individual crown with a 10-under 206 (69-69-68).
