SAN ANTONIO – UTSA Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox announced on Friday that Garrett Stokes is joining the Roadrunners’ throwing corps for the 2024-25 season.
“We’re excited to have Garrett join our squad this season,” Fox said. “He is a very talented thrower with significant DI experience. We’re looking to build on the foundation that Coach Riedel and his staff have built with Garrett while at UIW and continue to help him reach his goals in competition and in the classroom.”
A graduate student originally from El Paso, Texas, Stokes just finished his fourth season at UIW, earning the bronze medal at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships but not competing in the Cardinals’ outdoor campaign. At the 2023 Southland Outdoor Championships, Stokes earned bronze with a career-best 17.44m (57-2.75) shot put measurement, securing the silver medal on a 60.87m (199-8) hammer throw. Capping off his 2023 indoor season, Stokes claimed the Southland weight throw championship with a career mark of 18.62m (61-1.25).
Prior to San Antonio, Stokes earned second place in the shot put at the 2018 Region 1-5A Championships for El Paso Burges High School, going on to finish sixth at the UIL Championships. That year, he also was fourth at the USATF Region 10 Junior Olympic Championships in the shot. Stokes was also a football first-team all-city honoree as a junior and first-team all-district as a junior.
