SAN ANTONIO — Led by a 1-under-par scorecard from Jack Wehman, the UTSA men’s golf team wrapped up play in the Valero Texas Collegiate on Monday at TPC San Antonio Oaks (par 72/7,100 yards).
Wehman fired a 71 to help the Roadrunners register their second 296 of the event and move into a tie for 13th place with East Tennessee State — one of 10 squads in the top 30 of Golfweek’s preseason rankings in the field. UTSA posted an 891 (296-299-296) and ended up 11 shots ahead of North Florida in the event won by Oklahoma. Ole Miss earned runner-up positioning while Virginia and defending national champion Auburn tied for third place.
Wehman rode the strength of four birdies to log his first red number of the fall slate. Starting on No. 10, the senior from Austin bounced back from a bogey on his first hole of the day with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13-14. He then circled his number on the 337-yard, par-4 17th and on the 555-yard, par-5 second to get to 3-under par before bogeys on Nos. 5-6 knocked him back to 1-under for the round. He finished in a tie for 65th with a 223 (74-78-71).
Kaelen Dulany led all Roadrunners with a 221, good for a share of 58th. The sophomore transfer from Arkansas opened with a 72-75—147 over the weekend before turning in a 74 on Monday behind birdies on the 394-yard 12th, the 550-yard, 18th and the 589-yard ninth holes. He played the par fives at 1-under and recorded a team-best 10 birdies for the event.
Logan Vargas tied for 70th in his UTSA debut, as the junior transfer ended up with a 225. After carding rounds of 74 and 76 through the first 36 holes, the Lubbock native split the difference with a final-round 75 that featured a birdie on the 162-yard, par-3 16th hole. For the tournament, he tallied a team-high 39 pars, the fourth-best total in the field.
Walker Franklin and David Martinez rounded out the UTSA lineup in 74th (76-71-79—226) and 82nd (76-77-76—229), respectively.
Ben James of Virginia won the individual crown in a sudden-death playoff against Auburn’s Josiah Gilbert, as both players finished regulation at 12-under 204. The victory earned James an exemption to play in the PGA TOUR’s Valero Texas Open in April.
The Roadrunners will return to the course on Oct. 6-8 at the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas.
