SAN ANTONIO — Kaelen Dulany posted an even-par scorecard to lead the UTSA men’s golf team on the opening day of the Valero Texas Collegiate, which got underway on Saturday at TPC San Antonio Oaks (par 72/7,100 yards).
Dulany’s 72 paced the Roadrunners, who registered a 296 and are in 14th place, nine shots ahead of North Florida and only five behind East Tennessee State (291).
Dulany recorded four birdies en route to his even-par round and has a share of 43rd place with 36 holes left to play over the next two days. The transfer from Arkansas had a three on the 315-yard, par-4 fifth hole and also birdied the 461-yard, par-4 ninth to go out with a 36. He added a pair of birdies on the back nine with threes on the 394-yard 12th and 337-yard 17th holes to headline his first round as a Roadrunner.
Jack Wehman and Logan Vargas are part of a tie for 57th at 2-over 74. Wehman, a senior from Austin, registered four birdies, including back-to-back on Nos. 8-9. Vargas, a junior transfer from Odessa College, was steady with 15 pars and a birdie on the 315-yard, par-4 fifth.
Walker Franklin and David Martinez are tied for 74th at 4-over 76. Franklin’s round featured four birdies, while Martinez wrote down a team-high five.
Playing as an individual, Logan Zurn also is tied for 74th after carding a 76.
Oklahoma leads the team standings at 20-under 268, followed by Ole Miss (-15) and Auburn (-12) in the 15-team field.
Jase Summy of Oklahoma fired a 10-under 62 and has a four-stroke lead in the individual race.
Round two is slated for Sunday and the Roadrunners will tee off from No. 10 beginning at 8 a.m. Admission is free.
