CORK, Ireland – Recent graduate and UTSA women's basketball standout Kyra White has signed a one-year professional contract with Fr. Mathews Basketball Club, where she'll compete on the organization's Women's Super League team (WSL).
"Signing my first professional basketball contract is a dream come true, but the journey that led me here is what I cherish most," said White. "My time at UTSA prepared me in every way – mentally, physically, and emotionally. For the past two years, UTSA became my home, where I learned the importance of leadership, hard work, and perseverance. I'm grateful for the coaches, teammates, and experiences that shaped me. This moment is a testament to my faith, as I've leaned on God through every challenge, trusting His plan for me."
The WSL is the top women's basketball league in Ireland, which features 10 teams located around the country. It is an active member of Basketball Ireland, which is recognized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) as the nation's premier governing body.
"I am extremely happy about this opportunity for Kyra," said head UTSA women's basketball coach Karen Aston. "She represented UTSA so well during her time here and is so deserving of this opportunity. I know she will make the most of it and be successful. It's just who she is and I'm thrilled for her."
The signing should come as no surprise to UTSA fans, who watched her excel in the Convocation Center for the past two seasons. After attending Judson High School in Converse, Texas, White initially went to USC, where she played in 77 games with 22 starts, scoring 138 points and posting 131 rebounds, 49 steals, 25 blocks and 127 assists before transferring to UTSA.
She hit the ground running, winning All-Texas Honorable Mention by Dave Campbell Texas Basketball in 2022-23, following a campaign where she played 33.2 minutes per game and led the team with 142 assists and 4.5 assists per game, the second-most in CUSA. She also recorded the third-most steals (24), blocks (27), and rebounds (160) on the team while averaging 7.9 points per game.
In her senior season, she helped UTSA reach new heights as the squad went 18-15, collecting the program's most wins and first national postseason berth since the 2008-09 campaign. The 'Runners also picked up their inaugural postseason victory via an 80-62 routing of Northern Colorado in the Opening Round of the WNIT. White played a major role in finishing fourth in UTSA's first season as a member of the American Athletic Conference, logging the best league campaign since the 2016-17 season, when they went 10-8. The 'Runners also went 8-7 to start the season, marking the first winning nonconference slate since 2013-14.
White wrapped up 2023-24 with 4.8 assists per game, a figure that slotted her second in the AAC, and she also posted a 1.65 assists/turnover ratio that ranked third. She played 34.7 minutes per game for the third most in the league and 1.0 blocks per game were 10th. In addition to her stellar assist numbers, she charted 9.9 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game, and was second on the team, swiping 34 steals.
