UTSA trio selected for Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list

TYLER, Texas — UTSA’s Kevorian Barnes, Oscar Cardenas and Devin McCuin have been selected for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list, SPORTyler announced on Wednesday.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: played football at and graduated from a Texas high school and/or currently playing at a Texas NCAA Division I four-year college.

The watch list announced today will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists in November and then up to 5 finalists in December. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans, and previous winners. The finalists will be brought to Tyler for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for Jan. 22, 2025. A player does not have to appear on the initial Watch List to be eligible to win the award.

Barnes, a redshirt junior from San Augustine, Texas, rushed for a team-high 715 yards and six touchdowns on 147 attempts and also caught 14 passes for 61 yards last year. Also a member of this year’s Doak Walker Award Watch List, he logged a trio of 100-yard rushing games, including a season-high 129 and two scores on 16 rushes in the 37-29 road triumph over North Texas. The 2022 Conference USA Freshman of the Year will enter this season with 1,576 yards and 12 TDs on the ground in 27 career games as a Roadrunner.

Cardenas, a tight end out of San Antonio Brandeis High School, is a two-time all-conference performer for the Roadrunners. Last season, the John Mackey Award Watch List and Shrine Bowl 1000 member caught 32 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns en route to being named to the All-American Athletic Conference Third Team. A member of the program since 2019, he has 82 receptions for 997 yards and six TDs in 57 career games.

McCuin, a sophomore wide receiver from Jacksonville, Texas, burst onto the scene in 2023 as one of the team’s top targets. He caught 42 passes for 546 yards and three touchdowns and his receiving yardage total came up just shy of Kam Jones’ school-record of 578 set in 2011. His 72-yard TD reception against Army stands as the eighth-longest pass play in program history.

The Roadrunners, who are picked to finish second in the AAC Preseason Media Poll, will kick off the 2024 season on Saturday, Aug. 31, when they host Kennesaw State at 2:30 p.m. at the Alamodome.
