UTSA Athletics Launches McCombs Society to Support Roadrunners’ Student-Athletes

by Sean Cartell

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA Athletics and the Roadrunner Athletic Fund announced Monday the launch of the McCombs Society, the department’s official leadership giving society that will directly impact the experience of the Roadrunners’ nearly 400 student-athletes.

The McCombs Society will represent the principles and vision of Red and Charline McCombs, who were among the first donors to significantly invest in the lives of UTSA student-athletes by donating $1,000,000 in 2011. The McCombs Society will embody their philosophy to ensure that people far-and-wide engage with UTSA through sport, increasing UTSA admissions and creating an economic impact for the greater San Antonio community.

“The McCombs Society will be vital for providing our 17 sport programs and nearly 400 student-athletes with the support they need to excel at the highest level in the American Athletic Conference,” said Lisa Campos, UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. “Red and Charline McCombs were committed to education, sports and community. Those same values align with the mission of UTSA Athletics. The McCombs Family has long set a tremendous example of philanthropy, particularly in supporting student-athletes. We are grateful to the McCombs Family for their support, investment and partnership in creating this important leadership giving society.”

The McCombs Family has pledged an initial gift of $100,000 to the Bold Champions campaign as part of the creation of the McCombs Society.

“It is an honor to have our family’s name associated with UTSA Athletics in this capacity,” said Marsha Shields, dealer principal of McCombs Automotive, president of the McCombs Foundation and CEO of McCombs Enterprises. “My parents believed that UTSA Athletics is the front porch of the University and were committed to providing opportunities for young people in the San Antonio community, particularly UTSA student-athletes. This leadership society is built on the same principles that inspired their involvement with UTSA over a decade ago. My family is honored to make an initial gift and we are grateful for the many likeminded individuals who will comprise the McCombs Society membership for years to come.”

Roadrunner Athletic Fund members can join the McCombs Society with a minimum pledge of $25,000 over a five-year period or by contributing an annual cash gift of $25,000 or more to one of the following funds: RAF+, Capital Gifts, Endowment Gifts, Sports Excellence Funds and/or the Athletics Title IX Opportunity Fund.
