Aston announces trio of women's basketball staff promotions

Cameron Miles, Chantel Govan, and Sophia Ramos all received promotions on Thursday

SAN ANTONIO — On Thursday, head UTSA women's basketball Coach Karen Aston announced a trio of promotions, with Cameron MilesChantel Govan, and Sophia Ramos all receiving new staff roles.

Entering the 2024-25 season, Miles will serve as Assistant Coach / Coordinator of Scouting, Govan as Assistant Coach / Recruiting Coordinator, and Ramos as Assistant Coach. Additionally, Associate Head Coach Jamey Carey will return for her fourth season on the staff.

The announcement follows an incredibly successful campaign that saw UTSA go 18-15, collecting the program's most wins and the first national postseason berth since the 2008-09 campaign. The 'Runners picked up their inaugural postseason victory via an 80-62 routing of Northern Colorado in the Opening Round of the WNIT. UTSA finished fourth in their first season as a member of the American Athletic Conference, logging the best league campaign since the 2016-17 season, where they went 10-8. The 'Runners also went 8-7 to start the season, marking the first winning nonconference slate since 2013-14.

Miles, who served as an Assistant Coach since the 2021 season, has been named Coordinator of Scouting in addition to his duties on the bench. Prior to his time at UTSA, he spent two years as an assistant coach at the College of Charleston and four seasons at Lamar in various roles.

Head Coach Karen Aston on Miles:

“Cameron has been a huge part of our growth as a program. I am so thrilled to be able to elevate and reward him for his impact. He's a budding star in our profession and I appreciate so much his commitment to the game as well as the development of our young women.”

Assistant Coach / Coordinator of Scouting Cameron Miles on the announcement:

“I am thankful to Coach Aston for giving me the opportunity to grow and get better at my craft! The last three years have been nothing short of amazing. The players, this staff, and program are truly a family and I am grateful to be a part of it … I look forward to doing any and everything I can to continue to help it progress.”

Govan, meanwhile, was promoted from Director of Basketball Operations to Assistant Coach / Recruiting Coordinator. She's no stranger to UTSA, having previously served as a Graduate Assistant in the 2022-23 season after wrapping up her playing career in the Convo. Govan transferred to UTSA from Cal Poly for her senior season, appearing in 25 games before receiving a Bachelor of Arts in multidisciplinary studies in the Spring of 2022.

Head Coach Karen Aston on Govan:

Chantel is an excellent example of what doing your job means in our program and, quite honestly, in our profession. Whatever I have asked her to do, she has done in an exemplary fashion. I'm excited to see her grow as a coach and see her spread her wings in coaching. I am so very proud of her and thrilled to welcome her to the staff.

Assistant Coach / Recruiting Coordinator Chantel Govan on the announcement:

“I'm very grateful for this opportunity to grow within my career and excited to transition into this new role,” said Govan. “I'm super appreciative for the belief Coach Aston has in me to help this program grow and continue to move the needle forward as we compete in the AAC! ".

Sophia Ramos will transition from Player Development Coordinator to Assistant Coach. A San Antonio native, Ramos will enter her second season on the staff, succeeding an illustrious playing career at San Diego State. She achieved a master's and bachelor's degree in education with the Aztecs. In the classroom, Ramos was a dean's list selection in the Spring of 2022 and a Scholar Athlete from the Fall of 2019 to the Spring of 2023. She was also a Mountain West's All-Academic Team member for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 athletic seasons.

Head Coach Karen Aston on Ramos:

“Sophia is such a student of the game and is just learning what the coaching profession entails. Her ability to impact our players with her mentoring was immediate, and I expect it to be similar on the court.”

Assistant Coach Sophia Ramos on the announcement:

“Getting to jump into a new role is something I'm very thankful for. Coach Aston trusting me to take on something new says a lot about who she is, and I'm happy to continue work for her. I'm excited about the new challenges and responsibilities that will come with it while continuing to learn from our staff. Being part of such a historic season was such a blessing, and I'm very thankful that Coach Aston had me join her staff.”

Head Coach Karen Aston on the 2024-25 Coaching Staff:

“Along with Coach Jamie, this staff is filled with wonderful role models. I feel very blessed to be able to surround our team with them.”
