UTSA falls to ECU in American Athletic Conference series opener

The Pirates bested UTSA, 6-1

GREENVILLE, N.C. — The UTSA softball team suffered a 6-1 setback at the hands of East Carolina in the first of a three-game American Athletic Conference series at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium on Friday.

The Roadrunners (12-27, 3-10 The American) fell to the Pirates (27-11, 4-9 The American) as senior Jamie Gilbert (5-10) was pegged with the loss and Taylor Apple (10-2) earned the win.

The Pirates struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the second, using a double steal to dent the plate after a UTSA miscue extended the inning. They later capitalized on another UTSA error, increasing their lead to four entering the top of the fourth.

In the fifth, senior Erykah Guerrero started off the inning by drawing a walk and was pinch-ran for by junior Lindsey Davis. A fielding error allowed Davis to move to second, and she made her way to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Caton Letbetter. Madlock then used a hard-hit ground ball to score Davis, working a 4-1 score line.

ECU answered, adding one to their total in the fifth, and scored another insurance run in the sixth, en route to the 6-1 victory.

The squads will meet two more times, with contests on the docket for Saturday at 3 p.m. CT and Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
