‘Runners fall to Pirates in Game Two

UTSA will look to bounce back in Sunday’s series finale

GREENVILLE, N.C. — The UTSA softball team fell to East Carolina 10-2 in six innings of American Athletic Conference action on Saturday at the Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.

The Roadrunners (12-28, 3-11 The American) were bested by the Pirates (28-11, 5-9 The American), with freshman Iliana Saucedo (3-6) getting tagged with the loss and Addy Bullis (8-4) picking up the win.

Sophomore Madi Hays went 2-for-3 on the afternoon, scoring a run, while senior Taylor Jensen and junior Sophie Campbell recorded RBIs for the ‘Runners.

UTSA threatened early, as junior Jaylen Prichard legged out a double with one out in the top of the first. Campbell singled, and an errant pickoff attempt resulted in runners at the corners. The Pirates, however, found a pair of outs, halting the threat and keeping the game scoreless. Shortly after, ECU launched a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead entering the second stanza.

Not to be deterred, freshman Taryn Madlock and Hays slapped back-to-back singles to open the third before advancing into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Prichard. Campbell plated Madlock on a comebacker, and Jensen dropped a blooper into right field to score Hays and knot the contest 2-2.

The Pirates worked a 7-2 advantage on a grand slam and a solo home run in the fourth. They added a run to their total in the fifth and scored two in the sixth, taking a 10-2 lead that halted the contest early.

UTSA and ECU will face each other once more, with the finale set for Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
