SAN ANTONIO — After a Tuesday win over Lamar, the UTSA softball team is headed for Greenville, North Carolina, with a three-game American Athletic Conference series on the docket at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium. The squads will first meet on Friday at 4 p.m., before a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday and an 11 a.m. finale on Sunday.
The Roadrunners (12-26, 3-9 The American) are fresh off a midweek win against the Cardinals, as sophomore Reagan Smith tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering three hits and fanning five in the 3-0 win. Also performing well, junior Jaylen Prichard and senior Taylor Jensen starred at the dish, each going 3-for-4, while Jensen, freshman Brenna Jahn, and classmate Taryn Madlock all recorded RBIs.
Smith and Jensen also appeared on the latest edition of the AAC Weekly Honor Roll. Smith went the distance in a run-rule win against Memphis, racking up an 0.81 ERA across 8.2 innings of action across the series. Jensen was stellar as well, boasting a .500 AVG and a 1.315 OPS. She went 5-for-10 with two doubles, five RBIs, and three walks on the week.
Senior Jamie Gilbert and sophomore Sophie Campbell each serve as league leaders entering the series, with Gilbert posting eight complete games and Campbell smashing three sacrifice flies. Gilbert also checks in with the third-most games started, and her 93.1 innings pitched are fourth. Her 24 pitching appearances slot her fourth, and she sits fifth with 73 strikeouts. She isn’t the only pitcher on the league leader board, as freshman Iliana Saucedo maintains a 7.0 K/7 ratio that is fourth in The American. Additionally, UTSA has logged the 19th-most walks in the NCAA, working 129 free passes.
The Pirates (26-11, 3-9 The American) recently picked up a 3-1 victory over Campbell and earned ranked wins over Charlotte and Florida Atlantic in the month of March.
ECU has been one of the nation's best-hitting teams, as they carry a .322 AVG that sits 21st nationally, with 73 doubles on the year, leading the NCAA. That figure is heavily aided by Emma Jackson, whose 22 two-baggers place her atop the country’s national rankings, and her 55 hits represent the second-best in Division I. She boasts a. 426 AVG slotting her 48th nationally, as, Anna Sawyer hits .393, and Morgan Johnson tops the team with nine home runs and 38 RBIs.
The pitching staff holds a 2.71 ERA and have seen Apple Taylor, Addy Bullis and Jordan Hatch all earn victories. Taylor has gone 9-2 with a 2.22 ERA and a squad-best 76 strikeouts, as Bullis maintains a 7-4 record and Hatch a 10-5 mark.
