BOCA RATON, Fla. — The UTSA softball team narrowly fell to Florida Atlantic on Sunday, 3-1, in an American Athletic Conference series finale at the FAU Softball Stadium.
The Roadrunners (12-37, 3-18 The American) were defeated by the Owls (36-12, 16-5 The American), with senior Jamie Gilbert (5-14) receiving the loss despite tossing a complete game while Ainsley Lambert (8-2) picked up the win.
Sophomore Madison Lenton had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Junior Sophie Campbell picked up the squad's lone RBI and joined Lenton in logging an extra-base hit.
The 'Runners wasted no time snagging an early lead, as a bunt single by junior Lindsey Davis prompted a Campbell two-bagger that issued a 1-0 advantage. FAU swiftly responded, plating a run on a Roadrunner miscue in the home half that knotted things up.
UTSA threatened in the third, as Lenton batted a leadoff double and redshirt freshman Madi Hays dropped a single, putting the two in scoring position with no outs. The Owls, however, worked out of the jam, stranding the pair and keeping the contest tied.
Gilbert kept FAU off the scoreboard for the following two frames, ahead of a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth that saw a quartet of singles secure a 3-1 Owl lead.
UTSA will now focus on UIW, with a Tuesday night Crosstown Showdown set for 5 p.m. at H-E-B Field.
