UTSA set for American Athletic Conference Championship this weekend

SAN ANTONIO —UTSA will travel to Belleair, Florida, to compete in the American Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship, which will be held on Friday-Sunday, April 19-21, at Pelican Golf Club (par 70/6,881 yards).

The Roadrunners will bring a lineup of Hunter Bott, Jack Wehman, David Harrison, Brock Blais, Walker Franklin and alternate Bryson Thurston for their first appearance in The American Championship.

UTSA will play against Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, North Texas, Rice, No. 42 SMU, No. 48 South Florida, Temple, UAB and Wichita State.

The field will play 18 holes each day with tee times beginning at 7 a.m. CT.

In its conference tournament history — which dates back to the 1987 Trans America Athletic Conference (now Atlantic Sun) Tournament — UTSA has placed in the top five 19 times, including in three of its last four league championship appearances. The Roadrunners own six conference runner-up finishes, including twice in the last five years as they advanced to the Conference USA Championship Match in both 2019 and 2022.

Two Roadrunners have claimed individual league titles. Magnus Dohlvik recorded a 70-72-77—219 in 1997 to win the Southland Conference crown, while John Elizondo was the Southland's medalist in 2006 after carding a 67-71-75—213.

UTSA placed eighth at the 2023 Conference USA Championship behind an 18th-place showing from Bott, who posted a 74-74-74—222. Two years ago, Bott earned all-tournament honors with a fourth-place finish after firing a 3-under-par 213 (69-72-72).

The Roadrunners are coming off a fifth-place effort at The Aggie Invitational on April 6-7 in Bryan, Texas. Bott registered his fourth top 10 of the season by tying for seventh with a 4-over 220 (69-76-75) to help UTSA end up in a deadlock with 46th-ranked Louisville to notch their fourth top-five team showing of the campaign.

Bott paces UTSA with a 71.86 stroke average and six top-20 finishes in 2023-24. The senior from Montgomery, Texas, carded an 8-under 202 (68-68-66) to claim runner-up honors at The Clerico for his top finish and 54-hole score of the season.

Wehman carries the second-best scoring mark on the team at 73.96. The junior out of Austin boasts a pair of top 10s, including a tie for fifth at the weather-shortened Dorado Beach Collegiate after he fired a 9-under 135 (67-68).

Harrison has a 74.21 average and two top-20 performances in his senior season. A native of Trophy Club, Texas, he has posted eight par-or-better scorecards including in both rounds of the Dorado Beach Collegiate where he logged a 4-under 72-68—140.

Blais will make his third trip of the spring to his home state with a 74.34 stroke average under his belt. The true freshman from Ponte Vedra Beach owns seven par-or-better rounds and a top finish of 20th at the Benteater Invitational in February.

Franklin, a junior transfer, carries a 76.8 average through nine appearances, while Thurston, a senior transfer, has a 78.06 mark in six tournaments.
