Two dingers for Davis not enough as ‘Runners fall to 49ers

UTSA suffered a 9-5 defeat at the hands of Charlotte on Sunday

SAN ANTONIO — Despite a pair of home runs by junior Lindsey Davis, the UTSA softball team was bested by Charlotte, 9-5, in an American Athletic Conference series finale at Roadrunner Field on Sunday.

The Roadrunners (12-33, 3-14 The American) couldn’t overcome the 49ers (25-16, 12-6 The American), as Davis became the second ‘Runner to log multiple round-trippers in the 2024 season, with junior Camryn Robillard accomplishing the feat against Houston on Feb. 15.

Davis went 3-for-3 on the afternoon, with junior Sophie Campbell putting together a 3-for-3 day and junior Jaylen Prichard going 2-for-3. Additionally, sophomore Madison Lenton joined Davis in launching a home run.

In the circle, sophomore Reagan Smith (2-3) was tagged with the loss, while Sam Gress (7-8) picked up a win.

The 49ers struck in the top of the second with a single, a double, and a hit batter, loading the bases with no outs. CLT worked a walk before Smith clamped down and escaped the inning without any further damage.

In the home half, Robillard was walked ahead of Davis’ first dinger, which handed UTSA a 2-1 lead. The Roadrunners added to their total in the fourth as a Lenton home run plated freshman Sydney McReynolds, who entered as a pinch runner following a Campbell single.

The 49ers responded in the fifth, using multiple solo shots to trim their deficit to one. They then tacked on three in the sixth, propelling them to a 6-4 advantage. Davis then brought UTSA back within one on her second homer of the day, resulting in a 6-5 score entering the final frame.

A two-run home run and another long ball for Charlotte in the seventh handed the 49ers a 9-5 edge, and the ‘Runners were unable to recover, as the 49ers secured the victory in the bottom half.

UTSA will now face Texas State in a Battle of I-35 on Wednesday at 6 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Roadrunner Field.
