UTSA claims runner-up finish at UNF Collegiate

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Led by top-12 finishes from Camryn Carreon and Morgan Ellison, the UTSA women’s golf team claimed runner-up honors at the Momentum Transportation UNF Collegiate, which concluded on Tuesday at Jacksonville Golf & Country Club (par 72/6,020 yards).

The Roadrunners fired an 11-under-par 853, the second straight and fifth time overall this season that UTSA has posted a team total below par. It now ranks as the fourth-best 54-hole tally in program history with three of those occurring during the 2023-24 campaign.

UTSA entered the final day of the 54-hole event at the top of the team standings, but Sam Houston cut the deficit to nine shots, 569-578, shots following the conclusion of the second round, which was suspended Monday evening due to darkness. The Roadrunners carded a 4-under 284 in the final round thanks to 71s from Carreon, Ellison, Maria Bastarrica and Olivia Williams. However, Sam Houston turned in an 18-under 270 to claim the team crown by five strokes with a 16-under 848.

Host North Florida finished third with a 5-under 859, followed by Chattanooga (860) and Western Kentucky (861) in the 19-team field.

Individually, Carreon led the way by tying for fourth place with a 7-under 209, good for her 18th career top-10 finish. The senior from San Antonio opened with back-to-back 69s and then logged one of the four 1-under scorecards in the final round on the strength of two of her team-high 11 birdies for the week. The 2023 NCAA San Antonio Regional champion now has posted 18 par-or-better scorecards — including 14 sub-70 scores — in 24 rounds during her final season. Her 209 marked the sixth time in eight events that the all-conference performer has completed a tournament under par.

Ellison ended up with a share of 12th place — a season-best finish — after recording a 2-under 214. The junior from Peachtree City, Georgia, had a 69 in the first round and then bounced back from a 74 with a 71 on Tuesday to notch her third top-15 finish of the season. Ellison, who wrote down a team-best 41 pars this week, now owns nine par-or-better rounds and a second 54-hole total below par.

Daniela Abonce tied for 29th with a 218 (74-79-75), while Bastarrica (73-75-71—219) and Williams (71-77-71—219) ended up in a tie for 35th to round out the UTSA lineup.

The Roadrunners will return to action on March 30-31 when they compete in The Bruzzy in Ardmore, Oklahoma.
