UTSA in contention after opening day of The Bruzzy

ARDMORE, Okla. — Camryn Carreon and Daniela Abonce are in the top five individuals and the UTSA women’s golf team is in second place after the opening day of The Bruzzy, which teed off on Saturday at Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club (par 70/6,071 yards).

The Roadrunners posted rounds of 290 and 281 and are only one shot behind No. 8-ranked Arkansas in the 13-team field with 18 holes left to play on Sunday. UTSA has a two-shot advantage on Wisconsin and also leads Oklahoma by six strokes and host and 44th-ranked North Texas, as well as Notre Dame, by eight.

The Roadrunners will travel a lineup of Camryn Carreon, Daniela Abonce, Morgan Ellison, Olivia Williams and Hunter Nugent to compete against No. 8 Arkansas, Charlotte, FIU, Kent State, Minnesota, No. 44 North Texas, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, No. 28 Purdue, Texas Tech, Tulsa and Wisconsin. The field will play 36 holes on Saturday and the final round is slated for Sunday with 8:30 a.m. starts each day.

Individually, Carreon is in sole possession of third place at 1-under-par 139, while Abonce has a share of fifth at 1-over 141, as both Roadrunners are within range of day-one leaders Lauren Beaudreau of Notre Dame and Oklahoma’s Reagan Chaney, who are tied atop the leaderboard at 3-under 137.

Carreon opened the 54-hole event with a 3-under 67 that featured six birdies en route to her 15th sub-70 scorecard of the season. The senior all-conference performer from San Antonio registered a 72 in the afternoon on the strength of four more birdies, giving her a field-best 10 for the tournament.

Abonce turned in a 74 in the morning round behind a pair of birdies before posting a 3-under 67 in round two. The sophomore from Mexico had five birdies, including back-to-back circled numbers on Nos. 3-4 while recording her sixth sub-70 round of the season.

Hunter Nugent is tied for 21st at 5-over 145. The senior from Canada posted a 73 in the opening round and followed with a 72 in the afternoon, logging five total birdies on the day.

Morgan Ellison is one shot behind Nugent in a tie for 26th at 6-over 146. The Georgia native bounced back from a 76 in the opening round with an even-par 70 that included 14 of her team-best 27 pars on the day, the second-best total in the field.

Olivia Williams closes out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 62nd (81-76—157).

The final round is slated for an 8:30 a.m. start on Sunday.
