ARDMORE, Okla. — Daniela Abonce posted her second top-10 finish of the season to guide the UTSA women’s golf team to fourth place at The Bruzzy, which wrapped up Sunday at Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club (par 70/6,071 yards).
Abonce tied for ninth place to help the Roadrunners register their second straight and fifth overall top-five showing of the 2023-24 campaign.
UTSA finished with an 873 (290-281-302) to place fourth in the 13-team field, two shots ahead of a tie for fifth between No. 44-ranked North Texas and Oklahoma. The Roadrunners also ended up ahead of Texas Tech (876), Minnesota (880), Kent State (884) and No. 28 Purdue (889) in the top 10.
Abonce logged the second-best finish of her young collegiate career after turning in her second 74 of the weekend to close out a 215 (74-67-74). The sophomore from Veracruz, Mexico, wrote down 13 pars and a birdie on the 278-yard, par-4 14th hole in her final round, ending the event with 35 pars and eight birdies.
Camryn Carreon was close behind her teammate in a tie for 14th with a 216. After opening with a 67-72—139 on Saturday, the senior all-conference performer settled for a 77 in the final round that featured two of her tournament-best 12 birdies.
Hunter Nugent grabbed sole possession of 24th with a 220. The senior from Canada opened with a 73-72—145 before Sunday’s 75 that was highlighted by a birdie on the 157-yard, par-3 fourth.
Morgan Ellison and Olivia Williams rounded out the UTSA lineup in 40th (76-70-79—225) and 61st (81-76-76—233), respectively.
No. 8 Arkansas claimed the team title with an 856, followed by Notre Dame (866) and Wisconsin (870) in the top three.
Notre Dame’s Lauren Beaudreau won the individual crown with a 3-under 207 (70-67-70).
The Roadrunners will return to action on April 7-9 when they compete in the Chattanooga Classic.
