ARLINGTON, Texas — The UTSA softball team suffered a pair of defeats on Saturday, as they first fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-2, before dropping an 8-2 contest at the hands of host school UT Arlington on Day Two of the Boerner Invitational at Allan Saxe Field.

The Roadrunners (6-14, 0-0 The American) will look to bounce back on Sunday, as they wrap up the tournament on Sunday, with a 10 a.m. contest on the docket against Grambling State.

Game One vs Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

The Roadrunners suffered a 4-2 setback at the hands of the Islanders (12-5, 0-0 SLC), with senior Kenzie Schultz (0-6) getting tagged with the loss, while Primrose Aholelei (7-4) earned the win for TAMUCC.

UTSA struck first in the inaugural frame, as junior Jaylen Prichard slapped a leadoff single before denting home on a senior Taylor Jensen sacrifice fly. The Islanders quickly replied, capitalizing on a Roadrunner miscue to knot things up at one apiece.

Neither team crossed the plate across the next three innings, as UTSA broke the deadlock in the fifth. Junior Camryn Robillard smacked a leadoff double and later scored on an errant Islander throw, issuing a 2-1 Roadrunner lead.

TAMUCC, however, pushed across three in the bottom of the sixth, as a UTSA error combined with multiple Islander singles to create a 4-2 edge for the opposition.

Robillard was plunked to open the top of the seventh but could not advance into scoring position as TAMUCC secured their victory.

Game Two at UT Arlington

The Mavericks (7-14, 0-0 WAC) claimed an 8-2 victory over the Roadrunners in their second game of the day, as freshman Meredith Schmitt (0-2) was dealt the loss and Abi Gutierrez (3-1) the win.

In the effort, newcomer Brenna Jahn went 2-for-4 with a home run, and the freshman tandem of Hailey Carmona and Iliana Saucedo each tossed a hitless inning.

The ‘Runners again started scoring in the top of the first, as Jahn and Jensen each logged singles before a fielding error allowed Jahn to cross the plate. Sophomore Reagan Smith worked a clean bottom half, but UTA took a 2-1 lead after putting up a crooked number in the bottom of the second.

Jahn smashed her home run in the top of the third, knotting the contest, but the Mavericks loaded up the bases and scored one on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to go back up.

A grand slam for UTA in the bottom of the fourth issued the opposition an 8-2 advantage in what represented the final runs of the ballgame.
