SAN ANTONIO – Competition opened for two groups of Roadrunners on Thursday, with the squads split between the 96th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and the Bobcat Invitational. Highlighting the opening day of competition this weekend, freshman Edlin Laur notched a new UTSA high jump record at the Bobcat Invite in San Marcos.
A rookie from Tallinn, Estonia, Laur hit a career best 1.82m (5-11.50) in the high jump, clearing her ninth height of the meet during the heptathlon on Thursday. Ranking as the fourth-best height in the NCAA this season, Laur exceeded Whitney Flannel’s 2015 mark of 1.81m (5-11.25) and moved into second in the early American Athletic Conference standings. With four heptathlon events in the books, Laur has accumulated 3,278 points and is sitting in third after finishing 11th in the 100-meter hurdles (14.61), 11th in the shot put (10.62m) and 13th in the 200-meter (25.84).
The next top mark of the day was delivered by junior Idol Ramon with a fifth-place 9:42.06 in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Closing off the night for the Roadrunners, senior Sabrina Goains (38:42.49) and junior Brooke Veltman (39:13.20) went back-to-back at second and third in the women’s 10,000-meter nightcap, producing the 16th- and 20-best marks in the NCAA this year for the 10k.
UTSA will see plenty of action on Friday in both field and distance events at the Bobcat, while the Texas Relays will see Roadrunners competing in the long jump, 100-meter, 100-meter hurdles and the 4x400-meter relay.
