SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA softball team is headed to Wichita, Kansas, for a three-game American Athletic Conference series against Wichita State inside Wilkins Stadium. The ‘Runners will first face the Shockers in a Friday doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m., followed by a Saturday finale at 4 p.m.
The Roadrunners (9-21, 1-5 The American) are coming off a series loss at the hand of North Texas but salvaged a 4-2 St. Patrick’s Day victory to close out the series and pick up their inaugural conference win. Senior Jamie Gilbert logged a complete game with five strikeouts for the win, while classmate Taylor Jensen launched a home run. Also performing well at the plate, senior Erykah Guerrero went 3-for-3, and junior Sophie Campbell had a 2-for-4 afternoon.
On the week, Gilbert worked two complete game victories, also besting Kennesaw State. She pitched 15.0 frames and fanned 11. Guerrero, meanwhile. posted a .417 AVG across 12 plate appearances.
Jensen has caught six base runners stealing, for the second-most in The American, and junior Camryn Robillard’s six home runs rank fifth. Campbell has recorded a trio of sacrifice flies for the 29th most in the NCAA, and Prichard’s 0.76 walks per game are 25th nationally. In the circle, Gilbert has logged 61 strikeouts for the fifth-most in the conference, and freshman Iliana Saucedo works 7.5 K/7 for the third-highest average.
The Shockers (13-10, 4-2 The American) are riding a three-game winning streak thanks to a sweep of East Carolina and have amassed a winning record despite playing eight games against ranked teams.
WSU is one of the top power-hitting teams in the nation, smacking 1.57 home runs per game for the seventh-most in the NCAA. They maintain a slugging percentage of .511, which ranks 26th. CC Wong holds the seventh-highest batting average in the country at .487, and her OBP of .560 is 14th. Chloe Barber has been dominant in the circle, fanning 73, and her 11.0 K/7 slot her third across the NCAA. Taylor Sedlacek drives in the most runs on the squad, with 21, and Addison Barnyard tops the team with nine home runs.
