Softball to face North Texas in Friday doubleheader, ahead of a series finale Sunday

The Roadrunners will invite the Mean Green into Roadrunner Field for a three-game series

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA softball team will welcome North Texas into Roadrunner Field for a three-game American Athletic Conference series. Due to severe weather, the schedule has been updated to a doubleheader on Friday at 4 p.m. before a 1 p.m. St. Patrick’s Day Celebration on Sunday.

As part of the festivities Friday and while supplies last, fans can receive a limited-edition UTSA “Double Feature” T-shirt upon entry at Roadrunner Field. Sunday, spectators can partake in a series of giveaways, including UTSA apparel and SeaWorld passes. Additionally, an exclusive batch of Roadrunner softball cards will be handed out at the series finale, and the players will be available for a postgame autograph session.

The games will be broadcast live on ESPN+, with Neal Raphael providing play-by-play alongside Hailey MacKay.

The Roadrunners (8-19, 0-3 The American) picked up their first road victory of the season last time out, besting Kennesaw State. After falling in a trio of conference matchups against UAB and suffering a 3-1 setback at the hands of Georgia State, the ‘Runners bounced back against the Owls, claiming a 5-3 win at Bailey Park.

Senior Jamie Gilbert pitched a complete game with five strikeouts, propelling the squad to victory, while sophomore Madi Hays went 2-for-4 with a home run. The win allowed UTSA to match the 2023 team’s tally with 29 games remaining across the campaign.

UTSA enters the weekend, sitting second in the AAC with 94 walks and rank third with 28 steals on the season. Individually, senior Taylor Jensen tops The American, catching six base runners stealing, while Sophie Campbell’s three sacrifice flies are 19th across the NCAA. Additionally, freshman Iliana Saucedo maintains a 7.9 K/7 average for the third-highest in the conference.

The Mean Green (13-11, 3-0 The American) swept East Carolina to open league play and, thanks to a Tuesday win over Abilene Christian, are riding a four-game winning streak.

McKenzie Wagoner and Mackenzie Childers have been stellar in the UNT circle, each recording multiple complete-game shutouts on the season. Wagoner ranks 12th nationally in that category with three on the year, while Childers has managed two. Childers sits just above Saucedo on the league’s K/7 leader board, averaging 8.7, and Wagoner is fourth with 65.2 IP.

After a challenging nonconference slate, the Mean Green has a 4.00 ERA and a .251 AVG. Cierra Simon and Mikayla Smith boast batting averages over .300, and Smith is the team leader with three home runs and 12 RBIs.
