Roadrunners set for spring season opener this week in Florida

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s golf team will travel to Boca Raton, Florida, to open the spring season at the Paradise Invitational, which will be held Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 5-6, at Osprey Point Golf Club (par 72/6,204 yards).

The Roadrunners will bring a lineup of Camryn Carreon, Federica Tavelli Westerlund, Morgan Ellison, Maria Bastarrica and Daniela Abonce to compete against BYU, Denver, East Carolina, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Indiana, Iowa, Notre Dame, Rutgers, South Florida, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin.

The field will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday with 7 a.m. CT starts scheduled for both days.

UTSA is coming off a fall campaign that featured three top-four finishes, including a third-place showing at the Sam Golden Invitational, where they fired a program-record 27-under-par 837 (282-275-280). The Roadrunners also set school standards for low 36-hole total with a 19-under 557 (282-275) at the Sam Golden Invitatioanl, as well as for low round with a 15-under 273 on the final day of the Jim West Challenge.

Camryn Carreon leads the team with a 69.33 stroke average and four top-20 finishes, including a pair of victories. The senior from San Antonio won the Badger Invitational with a 9-under 207 (68-69-70) and made it back-to-back with a 12-under 204 (69-68-67) to claim top honors at the Dale McNamara Invitational. The 2023 NCAA San Antonio Regional champion and all-conference performer has posted 10 par-or-better scorecards — including nine sub-70 scores — in 12 rounds this season.

Daniela Abonce ranks second on the squad with a 72.44 scoring average. The sophomore from Veracruz, Mexico, registered a 12-under 204 (68-68-68) to earn runner-up honors at the Sam Golden Invitational last September.

Morgan Ellison boasts a 72.75 mark and two top-15 finishes during her junior campaign. The Peachtree City, Georgia, native carded a 7-under 209 (68-70-71) to tie for 13th at the Sam Golden Invitational and later posted a 1-over 217 (72-72-73) for a share of 15th at the Dale McNamara Invitational.

Maria Bastarrica logged the top fall stroke average (74.25) for a true freshman since 2017, and the San Sebastian, Spain, native turned in her top finish of 27th after recording a 220 (74-72-74) at the Dale McNamara Invitational.

Tavelli Westerlund will be making her UTSA debut this week after transferring from Texas State last summer. A senior who hails from Linköping, Sweden, she was a second-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection in 2022 for the Bobcats.

This will mark UTSA’s third appearance in the Paradise Invitational. The Roadrunners finished eighth in 2022 on the strength of a 15th-place showing from Carreon, and they tied for 10th a year ago after Carreon grabbed a share of 10th place.
