MEMPHIS — Despite a senior Jordyn Jenkins double-double, the UTSA women's basketball team suffered a 60-53 setback at the hands of Memphis in an American Athletic Conference bout inside the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
The Roadrunners (14-13, 8-8 The American) fell to the Tigers (12-15, 8-8), as Jenkins scored 11 points and hauled in 11 rebounds before fouling out. Similarly, redshirt junior Elyssa Coleman scored 10 with five boards before an early exit, and senior Kyra White charted eight points with three assists and three rebounds.
UTSA started the contest hot, scoring the first six points in a stretch that saw multiple makes by Coleman. A slurry of free throws allowed Memphis to cut their deficit in half, ahead of a Jenkins bucket that delivered an 8-3 ‘Runner edge. After exchanging blows, the Tigers strung a pair of baskets together to work a 12-11 score, still favoring the 'Runners. Sophomore Cheyenne Rowe converted two from the charity stripe, and Memphis sunk a layup, issuing a 14-13 score line at the conclusion of the period.
A Tiger triple allowed Memphis to take a 21-18 lead in the second stanza before an 8-2 run permitted the opposition to take a 29-22 advantage. Rowe got another shot to fall, sending UTSA into the locker room, trailing 29-24.
A freshman Idara Udo jumper and a White three-pointer knotted things up at 29 early in the third quarter, but the Tigers quickly responded, sparking a 7-0 run to go up 36-29. Coleman halted the streak with a layup, to which Memphis responded with a bucket of their own. From there, a Coleman score sparked an 8-0 surge that prompted a White three-pointer and a 39-38 UTSA lead. The battle raged on, as a freshman Aysia Proctor floater capped off the quarter with the 'Runners leading 43-42.
Memphis began the final frame on a 6-0 spurt, creating a 49-43 edge. A Love layup followed before the Tigers converted back-to-back shots to take a 52-45 lead. White and Parker sunk shots ahead of a Jenkins layup that pulled the Roadrunners within three. Memphis, however, sunk their free throws en route to a 60-53 victory.
UTSA will remain on the road, as they are set to face Wichita State in Charles Koch Arena on Saturday at 2 p.m., with the matchup representing the Roadrunners' final away contest of the regular season.
