Roadrunners wrap up Chevron Collegiate at 3-under par

HUMBLE, Texas — Led by a pair of 1-under-par 71s from Maria Bastarrica and Camryn Carreon on Tuesday, the UTSA women’s golf team wrapped up the Chevron Collegiate at 3-under-par, good for a tie for 10th place in the team standings.

The Roadrunners registered their second 1-over 289 of the tournament to close out an 861 that also include a 5-under 283 on Monday afternoon, ending up with a share of 10th along with No. 41 North Texas and UNLV. UTSA finished two shots ahead of TCU and three in front of No. 33 Oklahoma State in the field that featured nine nationally ranked teams.

Individually, Carreon and Daniela Abonce led the way by tying for 25th at 4-under 212.

Abonce’s week was highlighted by a 7-under 65 that she posted Monday afternoon on the 6,171-yard, par-72 Golf Club of Houston layout. After opening with an even-par scorecard, the sophomore from Veracruz, Mexico, recorded eight birdies during her career-best round, which also marks the second-best score ever registered by a Roadrunner. She finished with a 75 that included three more birdies to give her a team-high 14 for the event.

Carreon also broke 70 with a 67 in the opening round, her 25th career sub-70 scorecard as a Roadrunner. The senior from San Antonio bounced back from a 74 on Monday afternoon with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday that was headlined by three birdies, all as part of a 2-under 34 on the back nine. The 2023 NCAA San Antonio Regional champion wrote down 13 birdies for the week and led all competitors by playing the par threes at 4-under par.

Bastarrica matched Carreon with a 71 in the final round on the strength of three birdies, two coming on a three-hole stretch on the back side. After opening with a pair of 75s, the freshman from Spain moved up the leaderboard on Tuesday and into in a tie for 59th at 5-over 221.

Olivia Williams and Morgan Ellison rounded out the UTSA lineup in 63rd (79-71-72—222) and 70th (75-73-76—224), respectively.

No. 34 SMU claimed the team title while Illinois’ Isabel Sy and Maryland’s Nicha Kanpai finished the event tied for the individual lead at 12-under 204.

The Roadrunners will resume the spring season on March 4-5 when they travel to Jacksonville, Florida, for the UNF Collegiate.
