'Runners fall to first-place Owls, 56-48

Redshirt junior Elyssa Coleman and senior Jordyn Jenkins each posted double-doubles

SAN ANTONIO — Despite double-doubles by redshirt junior Elyssa Coleman and senior Jordyn Jenkins, UTSA fell 56-48 at the hands of first-place Temple in American Athletic Conference action on Thursday.

The Roadrunners (13-12, 7-7 The American) couldn't overcome the Owls (16-10, 10-4 The American), as Coleman and Jenkins became the first UTSA duo to record double-doubles in the same game since senior Kyleigh McGuire and Yuilyana Valcheva each accomplished the feat in a Feb. 6. 2021 contest against Florida International.

Jenkins recorded a team-high 15 points to go with 10 rebounds, while Coleman charted 10 points and snagged 11 boards, with four blocks and a steal. Freshman Idara Udo scored nine and picked up five rebounds, while sophomore Sidney Love and senior Kyra White dished out four assists.

UTSA outshot the opposition, sinking 36% of their attempts to Temple's 27%. The 'Runners also saw 12 more points in the paint and recorded six more blocks than the Owls. The difference, however, came at the charity stripe, where Temple sunk 18 free throws to the Roadrunners' nine.

After a back-and-forth start to the first quarter, Love knocked down a triple to hand the Roadrunners a 7-4 advantage. Temple later knocked down a three-pointer of their own, ahead of a 6-0 UTSA surge that featured multiple Udo baskets en route to a 16-9 score line. Shortly after, Love went 2-of-2 from the charity stripe, allowing the 'Runners to carry an 18-11 lead into the second stanza.

Temple started the frame off hot, embarking on a 7-0 run that resulted in an 18-18 tie. The squads exchanged blows before the Owls headed into the locker room, holding a 30-28 lead.

Coleman and Udo sunk back-to-back shots to deliver a UTSA lead before Temple responded, creating a 32-32 deadlock in the third quarter. The battle raged on as consecutive makes for Coleman and Jenkins issued the 'Runners a 40-38 edge. Temple then scored the final five points of the frame, working a 43-40 advantage at the period's conclusion.

The Owl's success continued in the fourth, as they built a 51-41 lead midway through the quarter. Love halted a 6-0 Temple run with a layup ahead of a Coleman free throw and a Jenkins bucket that saw a 53-46 score line. Temple managed to keep UTSA at arms-length for the remainder of the contest en route to a 56-48 victory.

UTSA will next host Florida Atlantic on Sunday, with a Senior Day celebration set for 1 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
