SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women’s tennis team travels across town to face UIW on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mabry Tennis Center, before hosting Sam Houston on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners have started the 2024 campaign with a three-match winning streak, including wins over St. Mary’s (TX), Abilene Christian and Texas State. UTSA has a combined 14-4 record in singles play and 8-0 doubles record. Three Roadrunners are undefeated in singles play, including No. 2 Fatima Gutierrez, No. 3 Vittoria Baccino and No. 6 Magda Tuells. Gutierrez has clinched the match-winning point in every match thus far.
The Roadrunners hold an 8-1 all-time series record over the Cardinals, after UTSA fell to UIW, 4-3, on Feb. 25, 2023. UIW has a 1-4 record this season, picking up its one win, 4-3, against St. Mary’s (TX) on Jan. 26. The Cardinals have dropped matches against North Florida, Trinity (TX), Cowley County CC and Texas State. Isid Hernandez Leon leads UIW with a 5-0 singles record.
UTSA holds a 26-11 advantage over Sam Houston in the all-time series record, after the Roadrunners fell to the Bearkats, 4-3, on Feb. 5, 2023. The Bearkats have a 3-0 record to start the season with a pair of wins over Prairie View A&M and a win over UT Tyler. Paula Cerda leads the team with a 3-0 record in both singles and doubles play.
The Roadrunners stay in the Alamo City to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
