'Runners knock off first-place North Texas on the road

Senior Jordyn Jenkins delivered 29 points off the bench

DENTON, Texas — The UTSA women's basketball team once again took down first-place North Texas, this time working a 66-63 road victory inside The Super Pit. 29 points from senior Jordyn Jenkins helped secure the squad's fourth win over the team at the top of the American Athletic Conference standings.

The Roadrunners (13-11, 7-6 The American) bested the Mean Green (19-6, 9-4), as Jenkins shot 11-for-17 from the field, collected four rebounds, and swiped three steals.

Redshirt junior Elyssa Coleman flirted with a double-double to the tune of nine points and nine rebounds, while freshman Aysia Proctor poured in 16 points, including four triples. Also performing well, sophomore Sidney Love scored four points, with five rebounds and four assists.

Battling foul trouble, UTSA outshot the opposition, sinking 41% of their shots to UNT's 37%. The 'Runners also logged 10 more points in the paint and 12 more off the bench.

The Mean Green struck first before Proctor nailed three consecutive shots from beyond the arc to deliver a 9-2 UTSA advantage. UNT snapped the Roadrunner streak ahead of a Coleman layup that saw an 11-5 lead. The Mean Green then sparked an 8-2 run, featuring four free throws that knotted the contest at 13. A Coleman freebie polished off the frame with UTSA leading 14-13.

A second-quarter slugfest ensued as Jenkins nailed a triple to keep UTSA in front, 23-20. UNT responded, scoring eight consecutive points to take a 28-23 edge. From there, UNT built a 32-25 advantage before Jenkins knocked down a jumper and another three-pointer to cut the UTSA deficit to two. The Mean Green beat the buzzer, sending the squads into the locker room with UNT leading 34-30.

Love kick-started the third quarter with a three-pointer that pulled the 'Runners within one. The battle raged on as the Mean Green clung to a 39-38 advantage halfway through the stanza. UNT logged a layup, ahead of a Jenkins and-one that tied things up at 41. UNT then knocked down a three-pointer, and the teams exchanged blows en route to a 52-46 Mean Green lead at the conclusion of the period.

Jenkins converted an and-one, and Love later knocked down an elbow jumper, issuing a 47-47 deadlock midway through the final frame. Another made basket for Love and a trey by Jenkins saw a 60-57 Roadrunner lead, but UNT again responded, sinking back-to-back shots and taking a 61-60 lead. Coleman flipped the script with a layup, and Jenkins nailed a floater for a 64-61 UTSA advantage with under a minute to play. The Mean Green tickled the twine on a jumper, creating a 64-63 score line, still favoring the 'Runners. Jenkins went 2-of-2 from the charity stripe, and senior Kyra White blocked UNT's final shot, cementing a 66-63 win.

UTSA will head back to the Convocation Center, as they are set to face Temple, with a 6:30 p.m. tipoff on Thursday in the squad's annual Black History Month game.
