HOUSTON — The UTSA softball team suffered a pair of defeats on Friday, as they first fell to Northwestern State, 3-1, before dropping a 7-0 contest to Nicholls as a part of the Houston Classic at the Houston Softball Stadium.

The Roadrunners (0-8, 0-0 The American) saw a solid performance by freshman Brenna Jahn, who went 2-for-5 on the day, with a double and an RBI.

Game One vs Northwestern State

The Roadrunners fell to the Demons, 3-1, as Kenzie Seely (2-2) earned the win and senior Jamie Gilbert (0-2) the loss.

Jahn was a standout performer for the ‘Runners, going 2-for-2, and drove in UTSA’s only run of the ballgame. Along with Jahn, senior Erykah Guerrero and sophomore Caton Letbetter recorded hits for the Roadrunners.

The Demons struck first, pushing across a run on an RBI double in the top of the second before adding another in the third for a 2-0 lead.

UTSA threatened in the bottom of the frame as Jahn slapped a double into the gap in right-center before junior Jaylen Prichard was plunked. NSU, however, persevered, catching Jahn on a double-steal and turning a double-play to get out of the inning.

From there, neither team could dent the plate until the top of the seventh, when a Demon solo shot extended their edge to three.

UTSA kept battling as Letbetter slapped a single to lead off the bottom of the seventh, and Guerrero followed with a base knock of her own. Following a strikeout, a wild pitch allowed the pair to move into scoring position, and Jahn used a sac fly to drive in Letbetter. The Roadrunners, however, could not complete the comeback, falling 3-1.

Game Two vs Nicholls

Nicholls worked a 7-0 victory in the second contest of the day, as Molly Yoo (1-1) was issued the win and senior Kenzie Schultz (0-5) the loss.

The Colonels wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as a two-run home run put up a crooked number at the bottom of the first.

In the second, a UTSA miscue allowed a runner to reach base ahead of an RBI groundout that issued a 3-0 Nicholls lead.

A solo home run in the bottom of the fourth kick-started a rally that led to four Colonel runs and a 7-0 advantage.

The Roadrunners were unable to spark a comeback across the final three frames as Nichols worked a 7-0 victory.

UTSA will be back in action on Saturday as they conclude the Houston Classic with a 1:30 p.m. rematch against Northwestern State and a 4 p.m. contest with Massachusetts.
