UTSA claims third place at Bentwater Invitational behind four top-20 finishers

MONTGOMERY, Texas — Jack Wehman finished in the top 10 to lead four Roadrunners in the top 20 and help the UTSA men’s golf team to a third-place showing at the Bentwater Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at Bentwater Country Club’s Miller Course (par 71/6,788 yards).

Wehman entered the final round with a share of 12th at 4-over-par 146 (72-74). The junior from Austin fired an even-par 71 on Tuesday to move into a tie for eighth place at 4-over 217.

Meanwhile, David Harrison posted UTSA’s top score of the final round with a 1-under 70, while Hunter Bott and Brock Blais matched Wehman with 71s to help the Roadrunners jump two spots in the team standings on the final day into sole possession of third place. UTSA fired a 1-under 283 today and finished with an 875, three shots ahead of SFA and seven in front of UT Arlington in the 13-team field in earning its top finish of the season.

Wehman recorded five birdies, including back-to-back on Nos. 15-16, en route to his best score of the week, also matching his top finish as a Roadrunner from the 2021 Lone Star Invitational. He ended the event with a tournament-high 15 birdies and played the par fives at 3-under par.

Playing in his hometown, Bott was one shot behind his teammate in a tie for 15th at 5-over 218. After opening with a 74-73—147 on Monday, the senior wrote down four birdies as part of his final-round 71.

Harrison’s 70 on Tuesday featured six birdies, including four on the front side. He circled his number on back-to-back holes twice, on Nos. 1-2 and 16-17, in leaping 16 places up the leaderboard into a tie for 20th at 7-over 220 (75-75-70).

Brock Blais also finished with a share of 20th at 7-over 220. After opening with a 74-75—149 on Monday, the freshman from Florida fired an even-par 71 that was highlighted by four birdies.

Walker Franklin rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 46th (77-75-74—226). The junior transfer turned in his best round of the week with a 74 that included three birdies on a five-hole stretch on the front.

Playing as an individual and also in his hometown, Bryson Thurston wrapped up his week with a 71 on the strength of three birdies. The senior transfer finished in a tie for 51st (76-80-71—227).

Sam Houston captured the team title behind individual medalist Josh German (73-67-66—206).

The Roadrunners will return to action on Feb. 25-27 when they travel to Puerto Rico for the Dorado Beach Collegiate.
