UTSA to tee off spring season this week at Sea Best Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men’s golf team will tee off the spring season on Monday-Tuesday, Jan. 29-30, at the Sea Best Invitational, which will be contested at TPC Sawgrass Dye’s Valley (par 70/6,873 yards) in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

The Roadrunners will line up against Campbell, Cal Poly, Florida, Florida Atlantic, FGCU, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Lipscomb, Louisville, North Florida, UCF and USC Upstate.

The field will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday with 7 a.m. CT start times each day. 

This will mark UTSA’s spring debut after posting a trio of top-10 finishes in the fall campaign, including a fourth-place showing at The Clerico in its last outing on Oct. 23-24 in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

Hunter Bott paces the Roadrunners with a 71.33 stroke average and a pair of top 10s. The senior from Montgomery, Texas, checks in at No. 85 in the latest SCOREBOARD NCAA Division I Individual Rankings. He fired an 8-under-par 202 (68-68-66) to tie for first place at The Clerico before eventually earning runner-up honors following a sudden-death playoff. He also tied for ninth at The Carolina Cup after carding a 219 (74-67-78).

Fellow senior David Harrison stands second on the squad with a 73.33 scoring average. The Trophy Club, Texas, native owns a pair of top-30 finishes this season including a tie for 14th at The Carolina Cup after he recorded a 221 (74-74-73).

Those two Roadrunners will team up with senior Christian Rodriguez, junior Jack Wehman and freshman Brock Blais in the lineup this week.

Rodriguez, a Houston native, will make his second appearance in the lineup this season after tying for 71st (78-79-81—238) at The Carolina Cup.

Wehman ranks third on the team with a 74.08 stroke average and boasts a top finish of 21st, which he logged at The Clerico after firing a 217 (74-72-71).

Blais, a Ponte Vedra High School product who will be playing in his hometown this week, has a 74.67 scoring average in his true freshman season. The 2022 Florida Class 2A state champion and Florida Mr. Golf registered his top score of 218 (76-73-69) while tying for 43rd at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate.

UTSA made its first appearance at the Sea Best Invitational a year ago, finishing in a tie for eighth place. Wehman tied for 45th (79-71-72—222), Harrison grabbed a share of 49th (77-73-73—223) and Bott was 53rd (77-75-72—224) in the 2023 edition.
