SAN ANTONIO – UTSA Athletics, as part of its robust Name, Image and Likeness program for student-athletes, has partnered with San Antonio-based Locker Room Finance to provide student-athletes financial literacy education.
Locker Room Finance was founded by Conner Smith, a UTSA alum who was the drum major for the Spirit of San Antonio band and a founding member of the Bad Birds, an unofficial fan group supporting UTSA Athletics.
“We are committed to supporting our student-athletes with the best resources possible in order to maximize their NIL opportunities,” UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos said. “Financial literacy is an incredibly important component of our NIL education program and we look forward to this collaboration with Locker Room Finance. Providing financial education will set our student-athletes up for success both during their time at UTSA and in their futures.”
All UTSA student-athletes will be required to attend an introductory presentation in January about Creating a Financial Game Plan. Additional presentation topics will include financial wellness, tax strategies and international student taxes.
Through the partnership, UTSA student-athletes will learn about saving, taxes, managing credit, avoiding mistakes, post-graduate planning and “real-world” finances.
Smith, in conjunction with former UTSA baseball player Palmer Wenzel, has developed Game Plan: A Budgeting App for Student-Athletes that will be provided to all UTSA student-athletes. This app will allow student-athletes to easily create semester-long budgets with our unique algorithm tailored for student-athletes, track their expenses and acquire money management skills. This ensures they will graduate as financially savvy individuals ready for the next chapter.
UTSA student-athletes also will have the opportunity to set up one-on-one sessions with Locker Room Finance for individual financial coaching.
