UTSA to close out fall campaign with Jim West Challenge

SAN ANTONIO — The No. 50-ranked UTSA women’s golf team will close out the fall campaign on Sunday-Monday, Oct. 22-23, at the Jim West Challenge at Kissing Tree Golf Club (par 72/6,010 yards) in San Marcos, Texas.

The Roadrunners will travel a lineup of Camryn Carreon, Morgan Ellison, Maria Bastarrica, Daniela Abonce and Olivia Williams to compete against Cal Poly, Houston, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, SMU, TCU, host Texas State, Texas Tech, Tulane, UNLV and Washington State.

The field will play 36 holes on Sunday and 18 on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start scheduled for both days.

UTSA, which checks in at 50th in the latest Golfweek Team Rankings, is coming off its second third-place finish of the season at the Dale McNamara Invitational on Oct. 9-10 in Oklahoma.

Carreon posted a 12-under-par 204 to win her second straight tournament and collect her fourth individual title as a Roadrunner, all of which have occurred this calendar year. The senior from San Antonio carded rounds of 69, 68 and 67 to earn a two-shot victory.

Meanwhile, the Roadrunners placed third in the 14-team field, also receiving top-30 finishes from Ellison, who tied for 15th, and Bastarrica, who was 27th.

Carreon paces the Roadrunners with a 69.11 stroke average and her two victories. She has broken par in eight of nine rounds this fall with seven sub-70 scorecards.

Abonce stands second on the squad with a 72.44 scoring average and a pair of top-30 showings, including a runner-up finish at the Sam Golden Invitational after firing a 12-under 204 (68-68-68).

Ellison owns a 73.0 average and two top-15 performances, highlighted by a tie for 13th when she shot a 7-under 209 (68-70-71) at the Sam Golden Invitational.

Williams carries a 73.44 stroke average and she logged her top finish by tying for 10th at the Badger Invitational, while Bastarrica totes a 74.88 mark after coming off her top finish, a tie for 27th at the Dale McNamara Invitational.

UTSA finished 14th at last year’s Jim West Challenge behind an eighth-place showing from Carreon, who carded a 3-under 74-72-67—213 and earned Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors.
