UTSA completes first fall test at ACU Invite

ABILENE, Texas – The UTSA women’s tennis team completed its first competition of the fall season at the ACU Invite hosted by Abilene Christian this past Friday through Sunday, Sept. 29-Oct. 1.

 

DAY 1

In flight A East of doubles, newcomers Vittoria Baccino and Cassie McLay fell to Tarleton’s duo of Noelia Lorca and Elsa Boisson, 8-4. Moving to the West bracket, Baccino and McLay dropped the matchup with ACU’s Olivia Sears and Maria Cascos, 8-0, to find themselves in the South bracket on day two.

In flight B East of doubles, returnee Magda Tuells and freshman Ekua Youri defeated New Mexico State’s Dora Kurdi and Daniela Herrera due to injury on the Aggies’ duo. Moving on to the semifinals in that bracket, Tuells and Youri battled but fell to Tarleton’s Ximena Morales Araneda and Emma Persson, 8-5, to move to the 3-4 playoff bracket on day two.

In flight A East bracket of singles action, Baccino fell to New Mexico State’s Anna Pinaieva by sets of 7-5 and 6-2. McLay dropped a match to Texas Tech’s Jermine Sherif by both set scores of 6-2 in the same bracket. Both Baccino and McLay moved to the West bracket to continue play on day two.

Flight B East saw Youri advancing to the final round as she defeated ACU’s Maryjoe Crisologo by 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the quarterfinals on day 1, moving on to face New Mexico State’s Mingfang Lisa Zhu in the semifinal round on day two.

In flight C East, Tuells battled through three sets against New Mexico State’s Natsuki Nishimura, but ultimately fell by 5-7, 6-4 and 2-6. She then moved to the West bracket for day two.

 

DAY 2

In flight A South bracket of doubles, Baccino and McLay defeated New Mexico State’s Pinaieva and Whitney Moon by 8-6. In the 3-4 playoff bracket of flight B doubles, Tuella and Youri battled to defeat ACU’s Crisologo and Libby Blair by 8-6.

In the flight A West bracket of singles play, Baccino fell to Tarleton’s Boisson by sets of 6-1 and 6-4. McLay defeated ACU’s Maria Cascos as McLay won the first set 7-6 (4) and Cascos retired due to injury in the second set, moving on to the final on day three.  

In flight B East bracket, Youri battled through three sets and ultimately defeated New Mexico State’s Zhu by 4-6, 7-5 and 6-0, advancing to the championship round on day three. In flight C West, Tuells dropped the match Tarleton’s Clara Sobius due to an injury.

 

DAY 3

In flight A West bracket of singles, McLay defeated Tarleton’s Boisson by set scores of 6-4 and 6-0 to win the bracket.

In the championship round of flight B East, Youri fell to Texas Tech’s Arina Oreshchenvoka by both set scores of 6-2.

In the Wildcat bracket, Baccino defeated New Mexico State’s Daniela Herrera by both sets of 6-1.

UP NEXT 

Next, the Roadrunners will compete in Lamar’s Joe Pyburn Memorial Tournament at Thompson Family Tennis Center on Oct. 7-8.
