UTSA signee qualifies for U.S. Amateur in thrilling fashion

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — UTSA signee and incoming freshman Brock Blais qualified for the U.S. Amateur in thrilling fashion on Wednesday at Mission Inn Resort & Club's El Campeón course.

Blais, who signed last fall to join the Roadrunners, holed out his second shot from the fairway for an eagle-two on the fourth hole of a playoff to secure the third and final automatic qualifying spot out of the qualifier.

A native of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Blais opened the 36-hole tournament on Tuesday with a 3-under-par 69 that featured four birdies. He then carded a 2-under 70 that included six birdies on Wednesday to secure a spot in a three-man playoff for the final qualifying spot, which he ended up earning after his eagle on the fourth hole.

Blais will now travel to Colorado, to play in the U.S. Amateur, which will be held on Aug. 14-20 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village and at Colorado Golf Club in Parker.

A standout for Ponte Vedra High School, Blais captured the Florida Class 2A State Championship and was named Florida Mr. Golf and the 2022-23 USA TODAY High School Sports Awards Florida Boys Golfer of the Year.
