SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Bashiru Abdullahi has advanced to his second straight national meet after finishing eighth in the quarterfinal round of the 110-meter hurdles on Friday at the NCAA West Preliminary at Hornet Stadium.
Abdullahi's performance highlighted another busy day for the Roadrunners on the West Coast, as nine student-athletes were in action on the Sacramento State campus.
Abdullahi clinched All-America accolades for the second year in a row after logging a top-12 finish in the quarterfinal round of the high hurdles. Assigned to lane three in the second of three heats, the senior from Benin City, Nigeria, sped to a time of 13.61 seconds to finish fifth. The top three finishers in each heat earn an automatic berth in the national meet, meaning the three-time Conference USA gold medalist held down the second-fastest additional qualifying time entering the final race, as a fourth-place time of 13.80 was posted in heat one. He confirmed his trip to Austin after the fourth-place time in the final heat came in at 13.65.
Abdullahi's time was eighth overall, just ahead of Iowa's Gratt Reed (13.63) and close behind USC's Omotade Ojora (13.55). The UTSA record holder at 13.52 set last season, he earned second-team All-America honors last June after placing 15th (13.69) in the semifinals. He will line up in the same round on June 7 at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Earlier in the day, the 4x100m relay team of Logan Masters, Brice Chabot, Trevion McCalla and Dennis Phillips clocked the second-fastest time in program history with a 39.49. The quartet finished fourth in their heat just ahead of Baylor (39.55) and 13th overall in the field of 24, missing a berth in the national meet by one place, as UCLA grabbed the final qualifying spot with a 39.39.
Four Roadrunners qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Round triple jump. Dylan James led the way by placing 17th with a mark of 15.53 meters (50-11.5). Gabriel Binion was 27th with a leap of 15.17m (49-9.25), while Jacob Jenkins and All-American Jemuel Miller finished 31st (14.99m/49-2.25) and 34th (14.82m/48-7.5), respectively.
A pair of UTSA speedsters also raced in the quarterfinal round of the 200m. Chabot, the school record holder at 20.44, placed 14th in 20.82, while Phillips was 21st (21.18).
The final day of the meet will feature three Roadrunners competing on the women's side. Sigrid Kleive will get things going at 4:30 p.m. CT in the high jump, Oreoluwa Adamson will look to advance in both horizontal jumps when she competes in the triple jump at 8 p.m. and Alanah Yukich will race in the quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles at 9:25 p.m.
