DALLAS – Shortly after being named C-USA Hitter of the Week, senior Taylor Smith of the UTSA baseball team also earned National Player of the Week from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
As one of 12 players on Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week list, Smith found himself at the top of the list after an outstanding week on May 15 which consisted of him recording six home runs across four games. This is just the seventh time a Roadrunner has earned National Player of the Week, the last time being Chase Keng on March 29, 2021.
The Georgetown, Texas, native also earned a spot on Baseball America's Week 14 standouts as one of 10 players in the nation with phenomenal performances last week.
Against ACU on May, he went 3-for-6 with four RBI on a game-tying grand slam. Over the weekend, the Roadrunners' slugger hit five more home runs in a conference series against Louisiana Tech.
In the series opener against Louisiana Tech, Smith went 3-for-6 with five runs and four RBI, hitting a program-best three home runs in the game. This marks the sixth time a Roadrunner has reached this feat, the last time being on March 26, 2021.
In game two of the series against the Bulldogs, he once again launched multiple home runs (2) in a 3-for-4 night with three runs and two RBI. These two home runs brought his season total to 17, just one shy of the program record 18 home runs.
Throughout the season, Smith has been a force at the place as the Roadrunner's starting designated hitter. He is second on the team with a 1.102 OPS, .646 slugging percentage and .456 on-base percentage.
