Eight UTSA teams register perfect Academic Progress Rates

INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA has released the latest Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) data and UTSA saw eight teams register a perfect score of 1,000 for the 2021-22 academic year.

The sports of women's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, men's golf, women's golf, soccer, men's tennis and women's tennis all logged a perfect 1,000 APR for the 2021-22 year.

Additionally, women's tennis recorded a perfect 1,000 multiyear rate in the latest report, while eight other programs posted a multiyear rate of 970 or above. Those sports are baseball (977), women's basketball (982), men's cross country (972), women's cross country (971), men's golf (992), women's golf (990), soccer (976) and volleyball (983).

Four sports posted a multiyear rate that ranks in the top five among Conference USA schools with women's tennis tied for first, women's basketball and men's golf both tied for fourth and baseball fifth.

Each academic year, every Division I sports team calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each term, scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for remaining eligible and 1 point for staying in school or graduating. For schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.

This is the second year of publicly reported APRs after a one-year COVID-19 hiatus. Last spring, the Division I Board of Directors approved the release of APR scores but voted to continue the suspension of program penalties.

The minimum APR academic standard for each team is 930. Typically, teams that scored below the benchmark would have to face penalties that encourage an emphasis and prioritization on academics. However, due to the current penalty suspension in place, teams falling below the minimum 930 score will not be subjected to penalties this year.

Normal Academic Performance Program operations with program penalties and loss of access to postseason competition will resume in spring 2024. This will also include the public recognition of high-performing teams.

The high marks are not limited to UTSA's APR figures. Last fall, UTSA reported a department-record Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 87%, marking the eighth straight year the department has posted a GSR of 80% or better.

A total of 10 UTSA sports programs logged a GSR of 80% or better in the latest report. Five teams registered a perfect GSR in the latest report, as men's golf, women's basketball, softball women's tennis and volleyball all posted a 100% GSR. Additionally, the baseball (97%), women's cross country/track & field (83%), football (87%), women's golf (86%) and soccer (84%) programs each posted a GSR over 80%.

The latest report also saw UTSA establish new department standards for four-class average and single-year graduation rate.
