UTSA hosts Houston Christian in Tuesday midweek contest

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team (6-27) opens up a four-game homestand on Tuesday night, with Houston Christian (14-20) traveling to Roadrunner Field in midweek action. The Roadrunners and Huskies are meeting for the 30th time and are scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday, April 4.

UTSA Quick Hits

  • Last week, UTSA dropped road contests at No. 21 Baylor and FIU, going 0-4 on the week.
  • Junior Shortstop Kat Ibarra leads the UTSA offense in BA (.358), hits (39), runs (23), slugging percentage (.541), on-base percentage (.444), doubles (11), triples (3), walks (17) and stolen bases (6) – On defense, Ibarra has a team-high 47 assists (with 60 putouts), nine (9) double plays and has delivered the tag on six caught-stealing plays.
  • In last Friday's series opener against FIU, UTSA's defense tied a single-season school record with three (3) double plays in one game.
  • Super senior Marena Estell bats .308 with 24 hits, five (5) doubles, two (2) home runs, leading UTSA with 18 RBI as well as 10 runs.
  • Junior catcher Erykah Guerrero has a team-best four (4) home runs.
  • The UTSA offense averages .247 hitting, 6.4 hits, 4.1 walks and 3.8 runs per game.


Series vs. Houston Christian
Previously known as Houston Baptist until September 2022, Houston Christian and UTSA will meet for the 30th time on Tuesday. The Roadrunners hold a 22-7 lead in the series, which dates to 1992, when the Huskies were the very first opponent UTSA softball ever played – meeting in a doubleheader in San Antonio. The teams met last season in Houston with a 9-1 UTSA win, marking two straight for the Roadrunners. UTSA has won the last four at home in San Antonio, and nine of the last 10.
 
Houston Christian Quick Hits

  • HCU comes to Roadrunner Field at 14-20 overall and 4-5 in Southland Conference play.
    • The Huskies were 19-29 a year ago, but reached the semifinal round of the SLC tournament.
  • HCU has won two of the last six, going 1-2 each in series vs. Northwestern State and UIW.
  • The Huskies have a team .262 average, putting up 6.97 hits, 1.9 walks and 3.62 runs per game. The pitching staff has a 3.43 ERA and averages 7.2 opponent hits, 2.3 opponent walks, 3.8 opponent strikeouts and 4.24 runs per outing.
  • Sophomore left fielder AB Garcia leads the Huskies in batting average (.417), leads the Southland Conference in hits (45), and paces HCU in runs (25), home runs (2), stolen bases (14), slugging percentage (.491) and on-base percentage (.442).
  • Sophomore utility Haylie Savage hits .327 with HCU highs of 25 RBI and four (4) home runs – and has also scored 16 runs.
  • Mary-Ellen Hall is in her 32nd season coaching the Huskies and has a record of 874-626 (.583).
