Roadrunners in contention after opening day of C-USA Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. — Paced by a 1-over-par scorecard from Jack Wehman, the UTSA men's golf team is in contention after the opening day of the Conference USA Championship, which teed off Monday at Texarkana Country Club (par 72/6,969 yards).
 
The Roadrunners posted a 298 and are tied with defending champion Charlotte for fifth place, only two shots out of the top four teams, which will advance to Thursday's match play. UAB leads the 10-team field at 4-over 292, followed by Middle Tennessee (+5), while Louisiana Tech and North Texas are deadlocked for third place at 8-over 296.
 
Wehman has a share of fifth place in the individual standings after turning in a 73 that featured a trio of birdies. The sophomore from Austin had a four on the 525-yard, par-5 seventh en route to a 37 on the front nine before registering back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10-11 as part of a 36 on the back. He joins four other players at 1-over par, four strokes off the pace established by Louisiana Tech's Lake Juban, who shot a 69.
 
Hunter Bott is one stroke behind his teammate in a tie for 10th place after recording a 74. The senior from Montgomery, Texas, opened the week on fire with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 2-4, including a 2 on the 227-yard third hole.
 
Christian Fanfelle has a share of 18th place after firing a 75 that was headlined by four birdies, two on each side. The senior from San Antonio circled his number on the second and fourth holes and then logged back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16-17 to help secure a spot in the top 20 with 36 holes remaining.
 
David Harrison had a trio of birdies during his 4-over 76 and the senior is tied for 26th, while Brayden Bare is tied for 34th (78).
 
The second round is slated for Tuesday and the Roadrunners will be paired with Charlotte and tee off beginning at 8 a.m.
