Carreon finishes fourth, UTSA claims third place at C-USA Championship

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Led by a fourth-place finish from Camryn Carreon, the UTSA women's golf team placed third at the Conference USA Championship, which concluded Saturday at PGA National Resort's Champion Course (par 72, 6,102 yards).

Carreon landed on the C-USA All-Tournament Team for the second straight year after finishing in the top five individuals, as the senior from San Antonio carded a 2-over-par 218 for fourth place following a runner-up performance in 2022. In fact, she was UTSA's top finisher at the conference tournament for the third year in a row, becoming the second Roadrunner to achieve that feat and the first since Laura Baker in 2006-08.

Meanwhile, the Roadrunners placed third in the team standings with a 908 (305-295-207). UTSA was five shots ahead of Florida Atlantic and eight better than FIU to extend their streak of top-four league finishes to 15 dating back to the third season in program history in 2008 (there was no C-USA Championship in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

One day after firing a 69, tied for the low round of the tournament, Carreon posted an even-par 72 to round out her 2-over 54-hole tally. She had one birdie on the front nine while settling for a 39, but she bounced back with a 3-under 33 on the back, registering an eagle on the 508-yard, par-5 10th and birdies on Nos. 11 and 13. The first Roadrunner to advance beyond an NCAA Regional when she qualified for the NCAA Championships last May, she climbed three spots on the final day while turning in her sixth top 10 of the season. She ended up only three shots behind medalist Catie Craig of WKU, who posted a 1-under 215 (69-75-71).

Four Roadrunners finished in the top 20 to help UTSA close out its C-USA era with nine straight top-four showings.

Daniela Abonce and Hunter Nugent each grabbed a share of 15th with a 229.

Abonce, a freshman from Veracruz, Mexico, opened with rounds of 75 and 76 before turning in a 78 that was highlighted by a birdie on No. 10.

Nugent, a senior from Oakville, Ontario, recorded a 77-72—149 for the first 36 holes and finished with an 80 that also featured a birdie on the 10th.

Morgan Ellison tied for 19th with a 232 (76-79-77). The sophomore from Peachtree City, Georgia, wrote down four birdies on Saturday in moving up one spot on the leaderboard.

Lauren Rios moved into the lineup on the final day and shot an 82 after Olivia Williams posted an 81-83—164 over the first two days.

No. 35 North Texas captured its third consecutive championship with an 878, while WKU was the runner-up (881).
