DALLAS – Earning the No. 6 seed, the UTSA women's basketball team is set to face the No. 11 seed Florida Atlantic in the first round of the Conference USA Championships. The Roadrunners and Owls will play on Wednesday at 2 p.m. on Court B at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
The Roadrunners are 3-7 in the Conference USA Championships since joining the conference in 2013. In the 2022 Championships last season, UTSA defeated UTEP by 58-57 in overtime in the first round, before falling to Old Dominion by 65-45 in the quarterfinal round.
UTSA (11-18, 9-11 in C-USA) and Florida Atlantic (12-17, 5-15 in C-USA) split their games during the regular season. During the first matchup in Boca Raton on Jan. 19, the Owls won the matchup by 81-66. Jordyn Jenkins led the team with her fifth double-double of the season, notching 25 points and 10 rebounds. Jenkins went an impressive 12-for-15 at the charity stripe. Freshman Madison Cockrell recorded her first double-digit scoring game of her career with 10 points. Despite the Roadrunners outscoring the Owls in the second and fourth quarters, the Owls used UTSA's low-scoring first and third quarter to secure the win.
In the second matchup on Feb. 23, the Roadrunners used an explosive first half to take a 77-61 victory over Florida Atlantic. Kyra White exploded for a career-high 22 points, along with five assists, a couple of steals and three blocks. This marks White's first 20-point scoring game of her career. Jordyn Jenkins led the team with 26 points scored, also recording four rebounds. The Roadrunners scored 16 points off of 22 Florida Atlantic turnovers. UTSA also led with fast break points by 16 points to 10 points. The Roadrunners shot 48.3 percent from the field, banking a handful more field goals than the Owls. The biggest difference maker of the game was the three pointers as UTSA banked seven three-point baskets to Florida Atlantic's two.
The Roadrunners are currently on a four-game winning streak, while also winning six of their last eight matchups. The Owls are on an eight-game losing streak, their last win coming on Feb. 2 against UAB (80-75).
The winner of this round goes on to face No. 3 seed Rice in the quarterfinal round on Thursday at 2 pm on Court B.
