UTSA Downed in the Battle of I-35

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA Softball team (6-23) couldn't shut down the Texas State (19-11-1) offense in the early innings, leading to a 15-0 Bobcat win in the second meeting of the Battle of I-35, Wednesday night at Roadrunner Field.

Kicked off by a pair of home runs in the opening frame, the Bobcats strung together 13 runs in the first two innings of the night, while successfully shutting down the UTSA offense in Wednesday night's rematch. UTSA was limited to a pair of hits, both delivered by junior shortstop Kat Ibarra. In the meantime, TXST logged 11 hits in the rematch with the Roadrunners.

The Roadrunners cycled pitchers three times before quieting the Texas State offense, as junior Kenzi Schultz took over in the circle in the top of the third and recorded the first clear frame for the UTSA defense.

Though the Bobcats were able to notch a run in both the fourth and fifth, Schultz slowed Texas State immensely and only allowed three hits across her 3.0-inning outing.

For TXST, Jessica Mullins (12-6) earned the win on 3.0 innings of action. Taking the loss for UTSA, Marena Estell (2-6) tossed the first inning with four runs on four hits.

UTSA will have a much-needed BYE weekend after six consecutive weeks of action, next taking the field in Waco against No. 20 Baylor on March 28, before heading to Miami for a C-USA series at FIU (March 31 - April 2).
