Softball opens 2023 campaign at the Bearkat Classic

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA Roadrunners softball team is set to open its 2023 campaign and the 10th season under head coach Michelle Cheatham on Thursday in Huntsville, Texas. The Roadrunners will compete in the Bearkat Classic, with five games spanning Feb. 9-11 at Sam Houston's Bearkat Softball Complex.

UTSA will open up on Feb. 9 against hosting Sam Houston, and will also play two games against Delaware and have solo matchups against Northwestern State and South Dakota State in the course of the tournament.

About UTSA
Last year, UTSA finished the season 18-30 overall and 11-12 in Conference USA matchups.

The Roadrunners return six position starters and three pitchers from a year ago, highlighted by Preseason All-Conference honorees, utility player Marena Estell and shortstop Kat Ibarra. A graduate student, Estell was UTSA's Co-Outstanding Women's Athlete of the Year as the designated player, along with 27 appearances at pitcher. She produced a team-best 3.54 ERA and 6-9 record in 89 innings in the circle, also batting .246 with team highs of 14 home runs and 31 RBI. A junior, Ibarra was a All-Conference USA first-teamer last season, leading the team with a .327 average and registering team highs for runs (37), hits (50), triples (3), total bases (87), stolen bases (3), at-bats (153) and assists (97).

Also back in the bullpen for UTSA, junior Jamie Gilbert paced the Roadrunners with 37 appearances, going 6-8 with a 5.23 ERA and a team-best 71 strikeouts. Behind the plate, junior catcher Erykah Guerrero batted .301 with 22 RBI and 19 runs, launching eight home runs. At second base, sophomore Camryn Robillard returns a .268 average with 25 RBI and 33 runs, collecting eight home runs and seven doubles while logging 69 assists on defense in 2022. In the outfield, senior Ciarra Mata (.245, 21 R, 10 RBI) and sophomore Emily Dear (.250, 23 RBI, 17 R, 8 2B, 5 HR) combined for 123 putouts.

The Roadrunners welcomed nine newcomers to the 2023 roster, including six freshmen, two Division I transfers and one player from the junior college ranks.
