Roadrunners claim H-E-B Tournament of Champions title

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The UTSA men's tennis team captured the H-E-B Tournament of Champions crown Saturday afternoon, defeating Louisiana 4-0 in the championship bout.

The Roadrunners (5-4) swept their way through the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi-hosted tournament this weekend, surrendering just one point in three matches. Louisiana (6-4) lost its first match since falling against Tennessee on January 27.

The Roadrunners defeated both Oral Roberts (5-0) and Radford (4-1) on their way to the championship round while Louisiana dispatched New Mexico State (4-0) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-3) on its way to the title match.

Doubles
UTSA struck first in doubles play as Miguel Alonso/Tomas Pinho defeated William Ribero/Alejo Ferrer Chueca of ULL, 6-2. Next up was UTSA's national ranked duo of Sebastian Rodriguez/Alan Magadan who were up against the Ragin Cajuns'Karlo Kajin/Al Sanchez Gonzalez. The Roadrunner duo fell to ULL, losing 6-2 and tying the doubles stage up at one apiece. The doubles point would come down to Garrett Skelly/Jackson Ross against Kacper Dworak/Vasil Dimitrov who had a back-and-forth battle. It was close throughout, however, Skelly and Ross pulled away, winning 7-5 and securing the first point of the championship dual for UTSA.

Singles
Following doubles play, the Roadrunners kept up the pressure, continuing their solid play. Magadan was the first to finish, as he quickly disposed of Sanchez Gonzalez (6-1, 6-1) to give UTSA a 2-0 lead. Shortly after Magadan clinched victory, Ross downed Calin Postea (6-2, 6-2) and the Roadrunners were at match point, needing just one more singles win to claim the championship. They didn't have to wait long as Pinho defeated Dimitrov (6-4, 6-2) and pushed the Roadrunners to the tournament crown. Rodriguez, Danijal Muminovic and Skelly's matches were all unfinished.
