SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's tennis team ended its weekend home with a 4-1 victory over Texas State in the Battle of I-35 matchup on Sunday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
After the duo of Aleksandra Zlatarova and Fatima Gutierrez fell to the Bobcats' Kate Malozonia/Mae McCutcheon by a score of 6-4 at the top spot, UTSA's second and third court duos battled to win the doubles point. At the No. 2 spot, Stanislava Bobrovnikova and Magda Tuells defeated Kiana Graham and Sofia Fortuno, 6-3. Finally, Alexandra Weir and Adeliya Mukhutdinova overcame Emily Niers and Jadeh Chan at the third court, 7-5, to secure the doubles point and 1-0 advantage for UTSA.
In singles action, Zlatarova made quick work of Graham at the top spot, defeating the Bobcat by set scores of 6-0 and 6-3. Next, Weir defeated Niers at the second singles spot with both sets ending 6-3. The Bobcats won their first point of the match to make the score 3-1 as Texas State's Malazonia defeated Mukhutdinova at the third court by 6-2 and 6-4. With just one more point to clinch, Gutierrez battled with Texas State's Andea Pineda, winning the first set by 6-4 and battling through a second set tiebreaker by 7-6 (4) to clinch the win. UTSA defeated Texas State, 4-1, to close out the weekend.
The Roadrunners improve to a 5-3 record, while Texas State falls to a 1-4 record.
UP NEXT: The Roadrunners head west for a three-match weekend in Las Vegas, Nev., on Feb. 17-19. UTSA opens the weekend against Utah Tech on Feb. 17 at 10 a.m., before facing UNLV on Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. and Kansas City on Feb. 19 at 10 a.m.
